Forerunner 945 - Unable to Map Open Water swims

Hi, am new to the 945 but purchased specifically as recommended for open water swimming. Have been on two lake swims now and although the watch is capturing the basics such as Time, distance and Calories etc it is not capturing the swim on maps. The app shows the Start point and Finish point on a map but does not capture any of the actual swim. Am I missing something obvious, would be very grateful for any help? Malcolm

  • It is a shame but the comment about GPS signals not penetrating water are true. My solution/suggestion  is to pop the watch into my tow float. I get an accurate record then even when I'm too tired to keep up a good front crawl stroke.

  • It is all true about GPS and water and professional athletes doing front crawl in open water and so on. But I think that you are also right to expect something that just works as advertised no matter the stroke you use or how well you execute it.

A solution would be to design some kind of accessory, like a swim pod (in a float?) that does the GPS stuff while the watch stays where it belongs and does the stroke recognition like in a pool and OHR if you don't use a HR strap. And then they sync, like the HR Strap and watch do or whatever.

But no one has to my knowledge developed anything like it and so at the moment this is the best we have even if it is not really good enough, at least not for everyone.
