Daily suggested workout – Experience after 2 months of training

Since exactly 2 months I follow the daily suggested workouts.

I started 2 month ago with VO2max 48 and now I’m at 54. The last 5 training sessions I improved VO2max and performance condition is always positive. So VO2max 55 should reached very fast. I'm very happy with this result.

I think the daily suggested workout is good for people, which have no personal coach. It propose me training sessions to improve my fitness (VO2max).

More Background:

I’m 51 and train to stay fit and healthy. I do not train for any race. I always run with HRM-Run chest strap to feed the algorithm with correct heart rate. In the last 2 years I have done two 16 week Garmin Coach half marathon training plans with a 2 hour target to finish my first half marathon in my life. During this 2 years I was rated 2 sessions with VO2max 53. That was my maximum since I have the Garmin watch.

The runs of this 2 half marathon training programs, were much longer and slower than what are my daily suggested workout in the last 2 months (maximum 55min). The daily suggested workout added much faster training sessions in my program, as what I have done before (very fast sprint and threshold sessions).

In the second month of training my training load focus is very balanced. That was never the case during the Garmin Coach half marathon training plans which had in the 16 weeks a strong focus on low aerobic training's.

Are there others which were following the daily suggested workout for more than a month?

  • Same here (esp. with indoor cycling)
As a result I now plan my own workouts (run and bike) based upon the expected result. So, if advised is an interval training with expected anaerobic benefit, I plan my intervals upon my own experience/taste.
(btw: based upon your name, I have the feeling that you are connected to my fanatic cycling brother Slight smile)

  • Hehe, could very well be. What is his name?

For as far as the workouts concerned: I am currently using Xert (https://www.xertonline.com/) for my planning. But I would like to switch to Garmin DSW's if they would work properly. I like the idea that all my data is in the same ecosystem and it saves me money on top of it. Unfortunatly Garmin is neglecting the details again and bug fixing takes ages :-(.

  • For starters: I do sports for fun (& pain ;) ) and I am not (yet) planning my trainings for an event. I guess it foremost makes sense to invest in coaching (be it in person or software) when you have a specific goal.

DSW combined with Training Load triggered me to look differently at training; All out Z4/5 training was what I did for years. Now I try to seek a balance, and now e.g. focus to built stamina in my lower HR zones with DSW and TL as a guide. And if you are like me addicted to Z4/5 training, it requires a leap of faith to follow TL/DSW.

Using DSW, I experience too that I don't reach the projected DSW benefit if I exactly follow the DSW recipe of the day. Therefore nowadays (especially for smart trainer rides) I combine what worked for me in the past, my power curve, my status of the day, and the ability to vary during the training itself to build my own training in the Tacx App. I even successfully transposed an anaerobic run workout to a smart trainer workout.

    Background
TL,DSW,FTP, VO2MAX, Powercurves etc for me are collateral benefits bringing me motivators and ideas to vary my training. Quoting Nir Eyal, I am Hooked ;) And of course COVID is part of the change too, as with COVID (sporting facilities and pools closing) I have converted to cycling too, and bought the day before the lock down a smart trainer (still uncomfortable being a Lycra Lunatic myself).

Wrt "I like the idea that all my data is in the same ecosystem"; same here and additionally that it's somewhere where trust is not likely to be betrayed.

Wrt "saves me money" && "Garmin is neglecting", well imho it's got to give somewhere... Up to now, quite pleased with the new functionality that has been delivered over the years, especially as it triggered me to alter my approach to training (even if it is for pain & fun mainly). And yes I am still hoping that one day my Tacx 2 will be performing upto sold specs with a proper firmware update (or again replacement).

(Wrt to my cycling crazy brother: he rides Rose (PBP with depleted DI batteries Rolling eyes) and Santos, and if I got you triangulated correctly you have something with Borat on our Intranet, and have 106 on a cap ;) )

  • Haha, gotcha. Well that's a nice surprise to meet the brother of Slight smileThumbsup. Thanks for your detailed reply. Yeah, I got a little disappointed about the DSW but happy overall with my Garmin Fenix. Didn't realise btw that we where college's to Slight smile. I will look you up tomorrow Rofl
