Has anyone gotten rid of their Edge 830 after purchasing the Forerunner 945 and had any regrets?

I've used the DCR analyzer and have done google searches, but can't seem to find what I'm wondering. I have a 935 and an edge 830, and the training loads don't add up, which has always been an irritation to me. Now that the 945 has the same interface load status as the Edge 830 I question do I really need both devices if the 945 does more. I get I won't be able to have the 10 fields without an IQ app, and I may lose turn by turn direction street names, but am I missing any other glaring differences that will leave me with remorse for selling the Edge 830? If anything, if I can get rid of it, this will simplify life as I don't like recording with both devices just so I can have total training volume on the 945.

  • Had a 935 and 520 for a long time, pre physio trueUp. So I had to record everything on the 935 eitherway. Got annoying stopping and starting both. Got the 945 and used RemoteScreen for the 520plus for a while. But I use a custom datafield and the RemoteScreen is very limited in what it shows.

By then I got pretty feedup with how Garmin doesnt use GC as the the source of the truth and sync everything to it. So I sold the 520+ and now just use the 945 with quickconnect band.

If i find a good deal on the 130+ I might be convinced to try again, but at the moment I'm fine with just the 945.

  • I stopped using my Edge 520 after getting the 945 and making sure it did enough for me, but I am principally a commuter cyclist...

  • Thanks, I'm mostly a commuter too. I think in the few instances I actually need the capabilities of the edge 830 I could probably pull out my phone instead. At least that's where I'm leaning right now.

  • For me, it's not so much the capabilities of the 945 versus an Edge (they're pretty close), it's visibility. My ageing eyes definitely appreciate the much larger display of an Edge, especially when it comes to complex displays like mapping.

I do fine with wrist-mounted while running, where the natural bend of the elbow brings the it closer to the eyes, but a handlebar mounted watch display does seem a bit small. Also while descending at speed, it is easier to quickly glance at an out-front Edge than than a handlebar-mounted watch.

I used to be watch only, but don't regret getting an Edge at all. Of course, your eyes may be sharper than mine.

The other thing is, you have the Edge already, and you will take a loss on the purchase price in selling (unless you can return it no questions asked?). You mightn't buy one if you had your time over, but given you already have one, you may decide to keep it.

  • I actually dit that. I had a forerunner 645 and bought an edge 830 for a 1 month Europe cycling trip (mainly routing and power meter funcons). Worked okay on dry not to warm days. On days of pouring rain the screen was uncontrollable. (had to lock the screen to prevent random touch interactions from water droplets). In warm weather with steep climbs sweat droplets made the screen go weird and self swapping data pages.  Annoying.

Then my forerunner broke down. Got a 945 and had no need for the 830 anymore as it has routing. Sold the 830 for decent price and never missed it. The buttons op the 945 are superb, in rain and sweat. Screen is big enough to use it for routing. If it's to small just bring it closer to your eyes and it will be as you would have a larger screen:)
