GPS FW 4.40 for the FR family

Hello Former Member,

any chance we might receive the latest gps fw soon-ish? :-). I would back my request with the fact that this should be a pretty important system update, as many of us (regardless F6 or FR945 owners) complained about the poor gps tracking in various conditions; it would be really nice to have at least the same level & care of component updates (not talking about features) as the F6 family. I'm also writing this as there has been (for example) a somehow big delay of the release of the Bl/BLE/ANT fw 5.04 between the 2 product lines, not to mention other patches...

Thanks,

Tudor

  • ...not to mention the several betas the F6 line is receiving (see today) with added features and improvements. it really makes me feel like i've drawn the very short straw and bought the very poor man's F6 watch, really :(

  • You bought a 945. If you want the F6 features perhaps you should have paid the extra and purchased one. As it is some of the F6 features have been ported to the 945.

  • i know, and i started to regret this :-). as i stated in other threads, the f5/935 shared the same fw so i was expecting same features and service on the 945. money wasn't the problem - 100 eur more is peanuts for what the watch costs so i would have paid that gladly. heck, i would even now pay extra 100 eur and get the f6 support, if that would be possible.

obviously, i'm mostly using gps / pay and music but it's really frustrating to see that the 945 is treated like the poor brother of the family.

for me and probably for some of the other 945 users this will probably the last fitness device and will move to the fenix line, most probably once a new device will be released.

edit: i bought the 945 pretty soon after it came out, think i got it in end may; knowing what i know now, a 3 month wait wouldn't have been the end of the world for sure :D. upgrading now wouldn't make sense because most probably soon enough we'll get a new iteration of the fenix - either 6 plus or similar and i'll go for that one. anyway - too bad as the 945 is a (very) good product, but it is definitely not getting the attention it deserves, at least not from an updating perspective. my bet? the next 945 will get some of the updates the f6 line is receiving and the development for the 945 will be halted only to component updates and patches (and i'm realistic, being a software engineer myself, that's what i would do).

  • @philipshambrook Well, when buying 945 last May I was lead to believe I am buying the top of the line triwatch which will perform accordingly. It was also mentioned that the internals are the same as F6 so updates should be seamless.

So far, 945 GPS accuracy is worse than 935 or 735, oHR/Elevate is also performing poorly.

While F6 gets frequent updates, the 945 is clearly treated as 2nd tier product.

  • The 945 is not the top of the line product though is it? That spot is taken by the Fenix and Marq lines. Garmin is entirely in their right to roll out features on the Fenix and not on the 945. It's called product differentiation.

The accuracy of the 945 is determined by the Sony chipset used. The F6 uses the exact same and won't perform any better.

  • 945 GPS accuracy is wors

Than the F6? Have you seen the complaints from the F6 crowd?

    oHR/Elevate is also performing poorly.

And you think this is any better on the F6?

945 is clearly treated as 2nd tier product.

You get what you pay for - although some would say no Garmin watch is worth what you pay for it.

  • well...no argue, you're right about that. but the whole thing was a bit misleading, as until now, more or less, the 9xx line was the plastic fenix and the differentiation was only at the built level and not on the sw side. but as said, i've learned my lesson and will act accordingly :D. if i would have known all this, i would have gotten an f6 pro, end of story :D.

  • but the whole thing was a bit misleading,

How so?  I've never read any claims by Garmin that the 945 was a F6 in a plastic case that would have the same features and updates as the F6.  The only time anything like that was suggested was by people who were giving their opinion.

as i stated in other threads, the f5/935 shared the same fw so i was expecting same features and service on the 945.

And this is exactly what is happening now. The 935 didn't have all the features of the F5 and updates/feature additions always came to the F5 before filtering down to the 935.

  • Well, AFAK 9xx is the triathlon line and Fenix is the outdoor line, so 945 is supposed to be top of the line product.

While I can understand that there is difference is features between them, the core functionalities should be kept on par.

My observation is actually that there are two different teams within Garmin responsible for Fenix and Forerunner line, there is a clearly better team working on Fenix...

It is my 4th Garmin and I finally learnt my lesson and will act accordingly when I get another watch next year (I am on 2-3 years replacement cycle)...

  • Why should the core functionality be kept on par? Did Garmn ever say that a 945 is a fenix without the overpriced case?
