945 4.40 OWS Tracking worse after update? (see examples)

Hi,

Watch is 945 with 4.40

Last year my 945 seemed to track open water swimming reasonably well. This year i started again and in the last 5 swims i noticed 2 things:

1. Sometimes within a few seconds I get like 3 signals that 100m is passed, resulting in these spikes:

2. And then there is GPS accuracy.

This is my recorded activity:

And this is my drawing of my actual(ish) route:

This is the link to the activity:

I know the difficulties and challenges when it comes to OWS tracking, but for my feeling the accuracy deteriorated.

Anybody else got these same results?

  • Both watches are updated with whatever the latest beta GPS versions. I would agree that the track on the map is currently better for the F6 than the 945 but they both show the overall route taken, which is very different to some that have been posted. The granularity of the tracks does change depending on the software loaded and perhaps the time of day, water surface, satellite positions etc. I have had better and worse at different times on both.

If you only had the 945 you would argue the track looks pretty wobbly but getting within about 5% of a measured 2000m course, with all the factors that affect swimming in the sea, is a good outcome. I would like to see closer distance between the two watches but not too disturbed with this difference. Out of the water, the distances are almost the same when running and cycling.

Our pools have just opened here but with significant restrictions - have to book lanes, changing room access limited etc. We're hopeful we might move to a less restricted state in the next couple of weeks so I'm hoping it doesn't get too cold to stop sea swimming until then. Current sea temp is 16C but air temp is around 13C. That's fine when the sun's out but a bit cool getting out of the water when it's not.
