FR945 swim map vs swim distance (GPS Issue)

Hello again

owner of a new FR945 (firmware updated etc), when swimming open water, the distance recorded by the watch is accurate (i know that from A to B is about the distance shown on the watch) but wh I look at the map, it shows a wrong starting point, wrong end point, wrong track and most of the times a track that is way shorter than what i have done.

any idea?

many thanks

Nicolas

  • For any other 945 owners that have a similar OW recording problem, don't use the smart recording option in System > Settings it's the default, it's not so smart. Use the 1 sec option until (if) there is a fix, it's not perfect but ok. Smart recording doesn't work for OW swimming, only for bike, run etc. Smart recording for OW should be designed to trigger on arm recovery but it isn't and could be 4-5 second intervals. 1 sec recording many limit battery etc for Ironman events so hoping not to have to test this out until it's fixed.

  • The same problem here.
I'll try 1 sec option but I am a little worried about battery life
    Will see Slight smile

  • Battery life is not overly impacted by switching to 1s recording and certainly there would be sufficient to complete an Ironman event. Yu can expect up to 36 hours with GPS and WHR on a fully charged watch.

Changing between Smart or 1s recording is unlikely to affect the GPS tracking. It only impacts the data saved, not the data measured.

The difference is all to do with the number of data points stored. With older watches storage capacity was limited and 1s recording leads to larger activity files. That's no longer an issue. The only measurable difference you can expect is perhaps a smoother track and that applies on land or swimming. Other metrics such as speed/pace or distance are not affected.

I've never swam with anything other than 1s recording so cannot say whether the track would be better or worse. I might have a look next time I go out. Intuitively, it shouldn't make much difference as 'change in position' is one of the factors that triggers saving a data point when set to Smart Recording.
