OPen Water malfunction

Has anyone else had this experience?

935 tracks for 300-500 yards and then poops out.  Data states 100 yards  9min 35 sec then 12 seconds for next 100.  Frustrating    I've called Garmin and inquiry has been forwarded to MAJOR ISSUE department.

Anyone else????

Thanks   poke

  • What was your swimming style? It won't work for styles that keep the watch constantly submerged, like for example breaststroke.

  • Would you post a link to the activity? Apart from some dodgy tracks when the watch was launched and when they updated the GPS, tracking OW swims with the 935 has generally been pretty good. As noted though, only really works with freestyle.

  • Just put it into your swimcap and it will be fine.

  • Hey Philip

    How're you doing?

    Here is a great example:

    Thanks  poke

  • tmk2

ONLY freestyle.  Last year  it tracked perfectly

  • Had the same issue today. My first ever OWS with the 935. Two sperate stretches of at least 3 minutes where no distance or pace were recorded. Really frustrating.

  • Thanks for that. Interesting to see the problem that's being encountered with the Sony chipset now materialising in the 935. If you are doing freestyle and nothing has changed then you'll need to work with Garmin. It's a bit too cold up here in NZ to get in the sea now. My 935 was tracking fine up until April.

  • I have GPS 2.50 and for me is working fine. I usually do a 550m segment with good precision… till GPS 2.30 big troubles, but since then again fine like old gps not galileo 4.40 …. connect.garmin.com/.../3752526965

  • I am having the same problem

    Here is the activity: connect.garmin.com/.../3754572950

Note that I swam for 41 minutes which is correct.  The initial track for 1-2 min was ok then it cut out and picked me up again from min 7:30 to 12:00.  But you can see the position sample rate is low.  Then it never tracked again yet I swam for 30 more minutes .  It said my total swim was 800 when the total swim was like 2,200 yards according to my friends watch. My watch got zero position updates in the last 30 min of the swim.

This was all free style.   I had it set to GPS only (maybe I should try GPS+GLONASS).  The gps was synced before i started.  My friend has the similar watch (not 935 but some other garmin version)  and it  worked well as expected.

Maybe it is my stroke style.  I tend to plunge my hands into the water pretty quickly  once my hands go past my ears.  My friend has long arms.  The reason to think it is not my stroke style is it did work for a bit.

I have tried open water before and it didn't work that time either.

Here is another one in a totally different part of the world

    connect.garmin.com/.../3495479066

You can see it seems to pick up location very rarely so the pace really jumps around nothing close to smooth position updates.

Finally here is a swim where I attached the watch to a float bag that I was towing so it was out of water the whole time.

Not it does much better but the position upates are still clunky compared to what I get running.  Not for this there is no stroke count because it is not on my wrist.  I am wondering if the open water setting for GPS has something wrong as again this worked but is bad compared to running.  Do I have a low sample rate setting or something?

Is there a setting I might be missing for open water sem? Any tips.
