Garmin explore - sync fail and restart

I just installed the garmin explore so I can sync my waypoints from/to my forerunner 935.

I was able to pair. Then it says syncing...syncs waypoints, then says sync failed and the watch restarts at the same time.

Then after restarts, it connects to phone, starting the sync process again...then fail and restart. This keeps repeating until I remove the device.

Anyone else experience this problem? Am I missing something?

Thanks

  • This same thing is happening to me with my Fenix 5s. Were you ever able to find a solution?

  • I have the same issue on my forerunner 935. Sync with garmini explore gives lots of problems, including restarts.

Also, if I both pair garmin connect and garmin explore, courses that I sync with garmin connect are removed again, bij garmin explore.

My only "solution" now is not to pair with explore. And I think I might have the dutch garmin support moved in a way where they may accept it is actual a problem. (this does not guarantee they will do something about it)

  • I've always found the FR935 - Explore sync to be very temperamental. It seems to work upon first pairing, but afterwards fails to connect. I've had to do a dance of removing the pairing/reinstalling the app whenever I've tried to reconnect, which is a massive pain. At this point, I typically only connect via Explore when I need to do bulk editing of Saved Locations/Courses.

My recommendation if you want to easily add waypoints/Saved Locations to your watch is to look towards some of the Connect IQ apps/widgets available. I personally love Sendpoints, as you simply search for your desired address on the https://sendpoints.us/ webapp, which generates a 4 digit code. Plug in this code on the CIQ app, and it automagically adds the address into your Saved Locations, even filling in the name.

Another CIQ app I use is GRouteLoader, which supports Sendpoints as well as RWGPS, Plus Codes and Garmin Connect routes. There's also a Widget version which means you can add Courses and Saved Locations mid-activity (but not supported by the FR935 unfortunately, I asked the dev and there's not enough memory). The GRouteLoader CIQ app UI is more complicated compared to the streamlined Sendpoints CIQ app, but it also launches you straight into an activity after importing a Location/Course.

Then there's dwMap, which syncs with a big list of route providers, most notably Google Maps. That means you can plot your route on GMaps and import to your Garmin via dwMap's https://dynamic.watch/ webapp and routeCourse CIQ app. Just note the import does not recognise drag-drop modifications to the GMaps route, you need to actually add additional destination waypoints. dwMap doesn't support importing of waypoints/Saved Locations.

I hope that helps, this is something that has been a massive pain in the side as a Garmin device owner, and I really wish they would address.

I had this issue with my Fenix 5s and was eventually able to fix it by restoring my watch to it's factory settings. Not sure if that'll work for your Forerunner, but worth a shot.

  • Former Member A factory reset is not a solution.

Garmin should fix their buggy software!! That's the solution. But they are to busy adding gimmick features (which don't work) to their new watches so marketing can say they have more features than competitors and can keep their watches at a high price point.

In the mean time I don't connect garmin explore. If I plot a course in garmin explore, I download the gpx, open it in garmin connect and then sync to my watch. That's also not a solution, but for the time being close enough to a workaround. Until my forerunner dies, and I buy a non-garmin watch.

  • I guess there is still no solution? It's 2021 now and I ran in exactly the same problem. Is this a joke from Garmin? The 935 ist advertised as being compatible with Garmin Explore.

I have >100 Waypoints with water sources and shelters that I need on my watch, doing this manually with some 3rd party ciq-apps is no alternative, maybe if i had only a few waypoints. The moment it starts the sync, the watch crashes/restarts.

  • Still not fixed it is now July 22 and it is still happening come on Garmin
