Cracked HRM optical sensor, active topics have been closed.

I just realized I have a case of the cracked HRM, and the active topic that the admins directed users to talk about the issue has been closed. Is there an official statement of position on the issue? A recall notice? An easy way to request a return or an exchange? An announcement where they tell us they believe the problem has been fixed?

At this point I think I am going to head to REI (USA retailer) and request a refund for a defective product, but my feeling is that I am going to be missing a watch that I love having and using daily. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1376510.jpg
  • Just noticed this on my device as well that was only purchased on the 9th May!

:( and I go on holiday a week today aiming to swim every day!

Mine's only 2 weeks younger than yours. Obvious question but does the crack mean its waterproofing is then compromised?

  • Mine is 14 months old and is also cracked. Otherwise not a scratch on the watch as I really take care of it. I do wear it all the time, though.

At this point I wonder if Garmin (given that this seems to be a widespread problem, affecting most users and through many devices) should issue a recall and fix the problems by re-designing the bezel that encloses the optical HRM.
  • affecting most users and through many devices

Bit of an exaggeration there. A few posts here and somehow you extrapolate out. I must be one of the minority. And I certainly don't treat mine with any great care. Of course there will be some people with problems. But I think it's a far cry from "a widespread problem, affecting most users.

Let's keep a bit of perspective here.

Sure. Some perspective: 7 pages of discussion about cracked sensors: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5x/1284466-5x-sensor-cracks

And that's just one of the topics. And it is closed.

    Another one, closed topic: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5x/1275676-f5x-cracks-on-hr-sensor-resin-due-to-curing-fault

I don't understand why those topics are being closed pointing to a topic that has been closed.

Those topics were initially closed to try and keep the discussion in one location, and ultimately encourage customers to reach out directly to product support. We would encourage any customer that is experiencing this issue to contact our Product Support team. We will work with you directly to collect more information and assist with an exchange.

    Thanks for the continued discussion

Yes, fine, but again these are the same few people that did have the problem talking ad nauseam about the issue. What you are doing here though is insinuating that the entire Forerunner 935 line manufactured was done poorly and each device is defective.

No. Just no. This thread is alarmist and your point is lost in the rhetoric. Can problems crop up for the watch if you mistreat it? Of course, but frankly the things you posted before to "to look for" are nonsensical. Frozen? There's a very big difference between something being "frozen" and just being "cold," Mechanical stress is a general catch-all term that doesn't help, Stating chemicals and acids are Hyperbole. You're scaring people and insinuating the watch was manufactured poorly without any proof other than a few people that had an issue.

I said this before, but you chose to ignore it, but this sounds like a Quality Assurance misstep in these specific cases where a few defects in the manufacturing got passed them and into consumers hands. It could be Garmin changed vendors or a few were made with one kind of material and then changed to another that was not as good as the first one. The people talking about the cracking could be straight up lying about how they used the device and broke themselves, only to blame Garmin. You don't know, but you're claiming otherwise
The Forerunner 935 as-a-whole is not compromised, and those of us (like me) that haven't had a crack or something break is proof to the contrary.

    Stop overblowing the situation.

I never posted about being frozen. Or cold. Or mechanical stress. Or chemicals.

You are probably referring to someone else.
