Can I disable step count during cycling

I've seen a lot of discussion regarding step counting vs. running, which could be argued to be the same, but rode to work today for the first time with my 935 in 'bike' mode and saw that it had mistaken the bumps along the way as 'steps'. It would be great to be able to disable recording of steps during biking - is that possible?

Thanks
  • Well while you are at it can you also disable "floor counting" during running as well?

The point being that Garmin continues to conflate every-day-activity metrics (steps, floors etc) with actual sports activity metrics.

It's pretty annoying and pointless if you ask me.
  • Only by manually deactivating Activity Tracking prior to each ride. :(
  • I don't get the logic of Garmin soft.
    When I'm rowing on a concept 2, I'm walking?

    I did a marathon (concept2) on 1 may and had about 20.000 steps. (normal ± 6000)
How difficult could it be to dissable step counting when rowing?
I have to wear the watch for stroke count. At least, this works very good.
  • Get this straight. The device is not detecting your steps. It is detecting movement that resembles a step. If you're active then ignore them, because they're essentially irrelevant. Steps and floor counts are for people who really don't do much regular exercise.

Look upon step tracking and floor counting as metrics for those who do little regular exercise. For heavens sake, if you swim, bike, run (or some other activity) for several hours a week, just how relevant/important are the number of steps you do, or the floors you ascend? Of more importance surely are the performance metrics for your specific sport.

It might be useful for Garmin to be able to separate them out, but it's hardly worth getting panties in a twist over it if you are already sufficiently active.

If it's not relevant, then Garmin should disable it. I can't see this any other way.
The 935 is a top sportwatch, not a fitness tracker.

I ask from a company that let us pay $$$, a little logic behind the numbers.
Example: In the past I forgot my footpod and did a short bike trip (10Km with GPS on).
My footpod overrides the GPS and I ended up with ±2Km?...where is the logic.

    I also have a Polar V800.
The footpod is not activated when you're biking.

Sometimes I wonder why you bough a 935? ... everything is just a number according to you ;)

What brings you to this conclusion? it's even a smart watch! Connected to my phone and everything! Personally, I'm happy that my once-in-a-while morning run counts towards the step and stair goal of that day :-)

But an option to disable general activity tracking during dedicated sport tracking, where you use the Bike, Row … whatever app, would be welcome.

Not speaking for philipshambrook but I got it because it was the best available and I intend to use it for a couple years - even if it's overkill for my limited sport ambitions.
  • I agree that the ability to enable/disable steps for each activity would be a welcome addition. Some people would want running to count toward their daily,m others want it just for walking. Indeed it effectively is an "activity gauge" as it is now, so consider it as such.

I went for a longish ride this morning and my step count didn't change much. After 3 hours, I only had about 700 steps. Most likely already about 300 before I got started so if my 935 added steps, it wasn't much.

As far as steps or floor from running, I do think it should be added. After all, if I'm going to run up 1000 feet, might as well add in the floors. It's not like I'm going to go out of my way to climb floors just to make my daily goal.
  • Yes, it does add it for running but not much is triggered by cycling. Not sure about floors running. I just think it should be user determined.
