Charging While Running

I am looking to charge during event to get all stats without dying. Would this work with the 935?

  • I don't know if that cradle will work but keep in mind that the screen will be non-functional while charging...it will simply show the charging state and not any activity in progress data.
  • Actually snotringbull, if in settings you change the USB Mode to Garmin, the activity continues to run while charging (you don't go to the charging screen, just a toast that shows you started to charge). If you leave it as "Mass Store", the recording it stops.

That is awesome and great to know, thank you! I never would have found that...so if you make that change then I'm assuming you can't browse the file folders? Not that you need to do that while charging + running but just so I'm clear. :)
  • If you change to "Garmin" mode, when you connect to a PC/Mac, there is a screen that asks if you want to switch to mass store mode while connected. so you can then browse the files on the watch, use Garmin Express, etc. So you can do everything you want (with an extra step with a pc/mac), and charge while recording.

With the semi-round fr's (23x, 630, 735) the watch itself figures things out, so if you charge while recording, it keeps to recording, but if you hook to a PC, it goes to mass store mode. (no settings changed required)

jim_m_58 do you think that charger cable will work in 935?

What is the difference between Garmin and USB Mode. Is there a reason you would choose either?
  • To be clear, the setting is called USB Mode and the two choices are Mass Storage and Garmin.

In my experience, USB Mode = Mass Storage is the same as the behaviour described in 230, 630, 735 -- i.e. the watch figures it out. I've owned both a 630 and a 935.

When USB Mode is Mass Storage:
If you connect to a wall charger, the watch remains functional. You get a small charging popup initially, but you can continue to use the watch normally.
If you connect to a laptop/desktop PC/Mac computer, the watch automatically switches to the charging screen and the watch's file system is automatically mounted on your computer. No questions asked.

The only difference with Garmin mode is, as Jim said, you are always prompted to go into mass storage mode when you connect to a computer. If you say yes, the behaviour is as above. If you say no, you can continue using your watch normally. Basically in Garmin Mode you have the choice to continue using your watch normally or not, when you plug into a computer. In Mass Storage mode you have no choice.

If you leave USB Mode as Mass Storage, you should never have to change your settings, unless you hook your watch up to a PC (and want to keep using the watch) OR you use a charger that the watch thinks is a PC for some reason (which seems highly unlikely)

So actually, any watch that has the "USB mode" setting gives you more choices, but you can always have the same behaviour as 230/etc. if you want.

Think of Mass Storage Mode as "Auto" and Garmin Mode as "Ask Me", as far as what happens when you plug the cable into a PC.

I don't think that cradle will work because it's for the Fenix 3 series, and the Fenix 5/935 use a different charging cable.

This is the back of the Fenix 3:

Unfortunately I don't see anything that would let you comfortably wear a 935 and charge it at the same time. Not even a cable with a right angle bend or anything.

If USB mode = Garmin, and you plug your watch into a PC and answer "No" to "mass storage", then you can't browse file folders. But it asks you every time.

You don't have to make that change just so you can charge and run, assuming that you don't have some weird charger that appears to be a PC. If you use a normal charger that just provides power, even in Mass Storage mode, you should be able to continue to use the watch while charging. And when you plug your watch into a PC, it should automatically mount the file system so you can browse the folders.

    Same behaviour as other Forerunners.

When I plug my 935 into a wall charger (e.g. cheapo USB wall wart, phone charger), I can continue using it fine, without switching to Garmin mode or changing any config. When I plug my 935 into a computer, it switches to the charging screen, I can't use the watch for anything else, but I can browse folders. Again without changing config or answering any questions.

Personally I would stick with Mass Storage mode unless I had problems.
  • You are going to be out of luck getting "all the stats" if you use OHR but would be OK with a HR strap of course. Just need to take the watch of your wrist to charge.

I had wondered if you could wear the 935 over a bit of a sponge or something so could thread the cable through a hole in it you could make.

Also do the quick fit bands allow you to wear the watch upside down? You can sort of do it with the normal strap but can't get it secure enough.
  • I just realized you don't see the battery life when you are in an activity...is there an app or screen to use to see battery %?
