Sleep tracking on Forerunner 745 does not work for me

Hello all,

I received a new device yesterday. It had the software version 4.20 (today at noon updated to 5.20).

So I did the first sleep test with version 4.20. Unfortunately, the problem I described here before was still there. I went to bed quite late today and was able to sleep until 10:30.

The sleep recording breaks off at 03:59 - that's when I was briefly on the toilet.

So Sleep tracking and therefore Body Battery are unusable. It must be a bug in the software or I have received two faulty watches so far.

Under the Forrunner 735XT was that with nighttime urination no problem at all.

Does anyone have an idea what to do now. I had received no feedback at all on my first request.

Thanks in advance and many greetings,
Arno

  • Today the sleep was recorded correctly for the first time. I still had to turn on the widget in the clock, then the data also appeared in the app.

I hope that remains so, would be good :-)

  • No sleep data was recorded last night :-(

  • The sleep tracking still doesn't work for me.

    1. it only starts if you go to sleep within the set bedtime (which often doesn't work for me).

    2. as soon as I go to the toilet at night or have to kill a mosquito, the tracking is interrupted and the time period is no longer correct.

With the Forerunner 735xt, none of this is a problem.

Since firmware 5.20, this FirstBeat tracking has been working in the background of the F745. This purchased piece of software does not seem to be well integrated into Garmin's software. It shouldn't work in other watches either, or is it different there?

On Jul 23, 2021 the firmware 5.60 was installed. There is nothing in the release notes about improving FirstBeat or sleep tracking.

Below are the days on which some sleep was tracked: does not work at all, i.e. only extremely irregularly.

And my statistics for the last year, tracked with the Forerunner 735xt until May 27, 2021.

  • Hello,

Thank you for writing all of this I want to let you know you are not alone.   My 745 before the FirstBeat upgrade didn't give me confidence.  It gave similar type of results each night, but I assumed it wasn't a good or close representation of how I actually slept.  It usually gave me three hours of deep sleep and other weird things. But consistant.

The first night after the FB upgrade it should ten minutes of deep sleep HA!  The levels of the four different measures are all very different then before, and it is also very inconsistent   e.g. ten minutes one night eighty minutes the next night, when the nights themselves were pretty similar.   Also, since FB there are several nights where it just doesn't give a reading.   I can only tighten the band so much and be comfortable.   So with band snug, and it still not giving me any readings about 20% of the time, and the readings themselves seemingly all over the place...I don't wear it to track my sleep anymore, maybe after a FB firmware upgrade I'll try it again.

  • After I did a reset again last week, it still doesn't work.

I just wanted to write it briefly: this morning at 5 I went to the toilet, there was a sleep record of about 5 hours.

Then I slept in until about 9 (Saturday): no sleep record existed, "No data".

This thing just has a bug and that's just bad with such a great watch.

  • Hi Chris I will get back next week.

    Have a nice weekend!

  • Also today I could observe it again: at about 5:00 am I was on toilet, sleep was recorded until then about 5h. After getting up later: no data.

Overnight has probably also come an update for the firmware. Let's see what that brings.

  • Here are the records of the last weeks, as you can see, it doesn't work at all.

On 6th August, I chatted with Garmin Support Germany, referring to the topic here. Then I was advised to reset the device again and to install the update to 5.60 via Garmin Express.

The recording on the 7th (marked red) and the following two days looked ok so far. After that, it stopped again. In the meantime, 5.80 is also on the device and was resetted - but the recordings do not look any better.

During the chat, the friendly employee told me that it was strange because there was no known general problem, otherwise they would have had many more enquiries about this.

I certainly have an irregular and restless sleep, but it can't be that the software fails like this:

Edit: The watch fits neatly, I think. See photo.

  • How tight do you have the band on your wrist? Maybe it's sliding around when you move in your sleep?

  • Did you update to software 5.8 already?  Same issue?
