RHR changes during the day

I noticed that my Resting Heart Rate changes during the day. For example, yesterday, I saw my resting heart rate (RHR) changing from 43 bpm in the morning to 49 bpm in the evening after an interval run. So I am wondering what is going on in the algorithm. I am wearing the watch at night and sleep longer than 4 hours.

According to garmin, the RHR is calculated as:

1. If you wear the watch at night

the watch will read and record the average of all readings while they sleep, excluding periods where any steps were detected or the measured heart rate falls outside reasonable bounds. A minimum of four hours of sleep time is required to register a reading.

2. If you do not wear the watch at night

RHR will be determined based on the lowest average reading over a one minute time period during the day. This method is less acurate.

So after the night, the heart rate is determined and should not change. It is changing for me though. Can someone explain what is going one here? I think this function is useless if your RHR changes after training. I think with this method, my RHR is overestimated all the time.

  • Sometimes I have changes during the day, too. But not so much. The whole RHR measurement is strange. In the morning I often saw lowest HR 51, but RHR 61. Meanwhile I don't know what to use as my RHR. I need it for the HR zones that are based on %HFR. I already switched to average RHR but the watch doesn't use it properly because Connect Mobile overwrites it as it hasn't the possibility for average RHR.
