Text messages on IOS

Hello,

This is a tricky one, I gave a friend a 735XT, and he needs me for "over the phone tech support" to get it how he wants it.  I'm an android user, and he has an IPhone so I'm challenged.

In googling and RTFM it looks like there are two possible solutions, though teasing out what does what is why I am here.

He wants to stop text messages from showing up on his 735XT.  In reading about this it seems Apple has an 'on phone' solution to this.  It also seems there might be an 'on the watch' solution too.

I don't need a brute force solution, just a customization that stops text messages from popping up on the watch. What are the different results on each of the following two methods?

---------------------------------------- On the Watch ------------------

SETTINGS > PHONE > SMART NOTIFICATIONS > (During activiites:OFF/Not during activities:OFF)

----------------------------------------   Or, on the Iphone" -----------------------

  1. Controlling What iPhone Smart Notifications Display on a Garmin Device

In most instances by default, any notification displayed on an iPhone will display on a Garmin wearable that features Smart Notifications. To customize what notifications display on a Garmin device, settings on the iPhone need to be adjusted.

To manage what Smart Notifications display on the Garmin device:

    1. From the iPhone, touch Settings

    2. Select Notifications

    3. Under NOTIFICATION STYLE select the app you want to adjust

    4. Choose your phone iOS version
    • iOS 12 or higher

Under ALERTS make sure that Notification Center is checked to receive smart notifications for the selected app.  Unchecking will turn off notifications for that app.

  • I just turn off Bluetooth and sync with cable or turn on to sync and then off again. You may be able to customize notifications as well.

  • Thanks  That works in sort of a brute force way.  I don't want to go that route, but actually do the "customized notifications" to just prevent text messages on an Iphone/735xt combo.  Thanks.

  • Even if you haven't had experience with this, if you have an Iphone and a 735xt please chime in, maybe you could try a quick experiment to figure this out. Thank you.

  • Holy smokes, I have this here and on the IOS forum and it is nothing but crickets. My theory is nobody with a 735xt uses an iPhone.  We're all Android people.

  • Can one of you IOS gurus just run through this and report back?

  • I only see .settings .notifications >Connect > Allow notifications (on/off). This works in the "sort of a brute force way" as it would allow or disallow all notifications (calendar etc.) although it looks like > settings > connect allows you to turn on/off calendars and notifications separately.

  • Thank Can you try the part that Garmin suggest on your phone, the "notification style" settings.  Thanks.

  • I am an Android user too but, you can manage the notification via the Garmin Connect app on the phone. On Android you go to Garmin Connect > Menu (top left) > Settings > Smart Notifications. You can then deselect "Messages". There must be a similar path on iOS. Hope this helps.

  • No I believe with IOS they do not allow apps, like "garmin Connect Mobile" to control that functionality.  Android does it differently and allows apps to make the changes. on IOS, the app doesn't decide, the phone itself decides.

From what I am seeing there are now Garmin/IOS users, we are all Android people...

  • I got my wife a 735xt for her birthday yesterday and she is an iOS user. I looked at this issue and found that you can't control the Smart Notifications (as you mention). How frustrating! I can see I will have to find some middle ground regarding this topic, she will also only want selective alerts on the watch but also not miss notifications on her phone. Yet another tick for Android.
