Garmin 735XT not recording ride

Former Member

the last few times I've used my Garmin to ride it has not started recording nearly a kilometre from home. I have had to turn it off then back on again to 'kick start' it. After that no issues, but I keep losing the first 7 or 800 metres of my rides. Any clues?

Also, I ride, swim, ride and have used the multisport setting. When I get home this loads to Strava as three separate activities. Can this be made to show as a single 'multisport' activity?
  • With regards to Strava showing multi-sports as individual activities, that's what they do, you need to moan at them to get it changed. I'm guessing their backend just doesn't support the functionality needed. If you want to see the activities as a whole event then just look at Garmin Connect.

Thanks CHUNKYWIZARD, I hadn't looked at Connect as I thought Strava simply took that info and rebroadcast it. Interesting that the software bothers to break it up.
Thanks TIMGROSE, I'll have to look more closely at the GPS symbol. I do leave the watch outside on the bike, switched on, while I finish preparing for my rides. I use the Edge 520 for bike-only activities and it always starts pretty much when I do. Will reply if I continue to experience delays.
  • I not sure Strava breaks it up, rather than it can't handle an activity with multiple sports in it so it sees each switch of sport as a new activity. It's definitely Strava's lack of functionality rather than Garmins issue.

By "switched on" it needs to on the Bike profile page or the data screens to get a GPS fix. You should see the GPS signal indicator top left then. Check it goes green and/or you see "GPS is Ready". If you start without a fix, it will find one eventually but getting a fix on the move is a lot harder than stationary so this can take some minutes.

    No GPS at all today

Okay, I seem to be going backwards. Did all of the above, left outside set to profile page but GPS never showed more than one bar. Even after a restart (turning off watch and restarting the whole activity sequence) several times during the morning's activities I never got a GPS reading. Now about to completely reset the watch before heading to my retailer for a warranty call.

BTW, does the Captcha step really achieve anything, other than annoy users?

It looks as if the GPS receiver is not working. I have tried several times to get a satellite signal by leaving the watch outside for some time, to no avail. I reset the watch and the time setting went back to yesterday (standing outside for several minutes during and after reset).

    GPS still sketchy

Okay. After standing outside for about an hour and going through all the settings I finally managed to get a GPS signal a couple of days ago.
Now I'm back to square one. It will not pick up GPS until I get well into my ride.
I have to switch the activity on and off a couple of times before it finally grabs the satellite, usually around a kilometre away from home.
I live on top of a hill with no surrounding obstructions, so there is no excuse for not getting a clear signal.
My Edge 520 picks it up immediately, but is not much use when I reach the ocean for my swim!
  • Does appear to be something wrong with it.

I would suggest seeking a replacement through Garmin support.
