735xt shows wrong time of day and date

Since around the time of the last time change (I also crossed time zones the same day), my garmin 735xt is showing wrong date/time. It's not just off by an hour, but rather right now, it's 7:50 am and my watch reads 4:17.

I've tried syncing a few times (Garmin Express with a Mac, PC, and iPhone/app -- all up to date and I have software version 6.2 on the watch)
I've tried resets (resetting all settings to factory conditions).
I've tried setting date to manual (setting time) and then back to auto, etc. When I set the time to manual, it gets the day wrong--no way to manually update the date.
I'm even back in my normal time zone and used Garmin Express to sync again. No luck.

Nothing is working.

Steps counts are also missing for some days (when I walked several miles).

Any one else have same issues? ideas for fix? (I'm planning a call to Garmin when they open service lines)
  • The watch sets it's time with GPS and not from your phone or PC.

Put it on "automatic" for time setting, and then start something like the Run app until you get a GPS fix.

    Thanks for the reply.

I actually ended up doing a few more sync's today (while in my regular time zone and location) and it asked if I wanted to install and update--which I okayed. Time still wrong, but then I used the iPhone app to sync. After both, it started showing correct time/date again.

How odd--I'd just installed the software 6.2 version before it started giving me issues. Maybe there was another update over the weekend?

Anyway, all appears good to go.
  • Currently I am facing this issue!

    Device: Forerunner 735XT
    Software version: 9.20
    Use: 2.5 months
    Already tried:
    • Restore default settings
    • Turn on/off
    • Sync using bluetooth (Garmin Connect Mobile)
    • Sync using USB connection (Garmin Express)
    • Enable GPS (for a long time)
    • Enable GPS + GLONASS
    • "Set automatically" in the clock options
    • Software update
    • Run GPS while doing an activity (Run), leave it so it tries to get signal.
    Notes:
    • The day is 3 days and 1 hour in the past.
    • No activity has been tracked due to this issue. E.g after sync there is no steps for today.
    • The GPS doesn't get signal.
    • I haven't hit the device. (I haven't drop it or anything like that)

None of the past has work!

    Update - Solution

Well, my device is working again. I'm not sure what was wrong, or how it was fixed.
After I leave it turn off for the night, I turn it on today, set various activities that require GPS (bike, run, ...), started walking around in an open place, and it slowly began gaining GPS signal, it took about 10 minutes, then it automatically set it's date and time.

    Thanks anybody for the help.
  • Great to see someone searching these forums before posting, however, multiple posts about the same thing do not achieve anything.

Note also, it's been 18 months since there was anything posted about this so it might be reasonable to assume it was resolved back then.

Are we to assume then that you are not getting any GPS recording during an activity? The only thing missing from your long list is anything referencing opening an activity. So, select an activity and wait outside until you get a GPS ready indication. (see post #2 above)

if you're still having problems you need to contact Garmin Support.

    26APR2018

Interestingly, this morning I ran into an issue where the watch became unresponsive and I had to do a hard reset where I held down the power button for around 10-15 seconds. Once the device powered back up, the time was wrong.

Its strange someone else posted with the same issue just a day ago with the same issue.

I will have to try syncing up with GPS to see if that fixes the time.

    ## Update 26APR2018

Going into Run mode and allowing it to sync with GPS fixed the clock error.
  • ss29640: Hard resets, in the way you have described, are known to cause the date and time-of-day on the Forerunner 230/235, 630, 735XT, etc. to be lost. I haven't quite ascertained what the device then uses as the clock time upon restart, although I think it has something to do with the last time the device synced with Garmin Connect.

franciscocorrales Setting the time to Auto and allowing it to acquire a satellite signal will update the time and date.

If your device is not acquiring a signal, you can sync with Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express to make sure your EPO data is up to date. If you still aren't able to acquire a signal please reach out to support so that this can be looked at directly with you.
  • Hi,
this morning, my 735xt showed the wrong time. I connected to GPS and that sorted everything out. However, I now feel that I can´t trust my watch, I mean, when will it show wrong time next time?
So my question is why it automatically changed its time in the first place?
  • bugwigs If the device's operating system crashes, and the device spontaneously restarts, it has roughly the same effects as a hard reset – which includes ‘losing’ the correct time and date, and the clock is set to (I'm guessing) the timestamp of the last sync operation it remembers.

With the FR230/235/630/735XT, any time you want to be assured the watch has the correct date, time and time zone, you should (prep the watch for a timed activity and) allow it to acquire GPS satellite signals, in the same way on an Internet-connected computer you'd perform a user-initiated sync with a time server (that is run by some organisation not in your control).
