Adding new 'activities' to the 735XT

G'day, people.

I'm evaluating buying the 735XT as a replacement to my VA. Why? Just because... :)

The input I was seeking was regarding the 735XT's ability to 'add' new 'sports'/'activities'. The DCR review on the 630 spoke about how one could create a new 'sport' such as "cow tipping", for example. Similarly, could I create 'Tennis' and record my tennis drills with GPS data and HR data? And similar such activities like maybe 'HIIT' with HR data (will be done indoors, so no GPS reqd for this)? This will save me the effort of first recording it as a 'Run' or a 'Walk' and then subsequently changing it manually on Garmin Connect, which is what I do with the VA currently.

Any other inputs and buying advice would be greatly appreciated. Esply from people who have moved from the VA to the 735XT.

Thanks, people.

Cheers,
Kartik.
  • No move from VA here, but the way adding custom activities works...

Choose a predefined or custom one
    Set color for activity
    Set name for activity
Use standard settings (or use another custom activity created before?)
Choose to use GPS or not
    Save

I just don't think you can disable HR monitoring for a custom activity but it seems this would meet your demands.
  • You can certainly set up a new activity profile and instead of say "Cow Tipping" name it "Tennis".

AFAIK you won't automatically get Tennis appearing in GC however as the 735 has a limited set of inbuilt activity types.

These ones are Running, Cycling, Pool Swim, Open Water, SUP, Row, Hike, XC Ski, Strength, Cardio, Other
Once you have selected one of these types you can name the profile however you like.

I imagine for Tennis you would use the Other activity type.
  • So it's just a custom profile for a native sport - that's the same as on the va-hr. But on the va-hr when you name the profile you can't pick your own name, and only pick from a list of things for that sport (so no "cow tipping" - but one of the choices available is "dog walking" for the native walking sport)

Speaking of walking, the way that new sports can be added is with Connect IQ apps, so that is a way to add "walk" to the 735, for example (I know of a couple apps that do that! :) ) and I think there's one for Tennis. The list of sports available on a watch is actually much shorter that what you can change it to when an activity has been uploaded to Garmin Connect, as on the watch, it's got to be a sport known in the .fit file format.

    Thanks, FlipStone. Much appreciated...

Ah! I think I get it now.

    Thanks for this, Tim.
