The footstep counter: how does it actually work?

Morning all!
The slew of questions continues. This time: the footstep counter. How the heck does it work? If it's the internal accelerometer (which it must be?) then if you're holding a load of things and hence not swinging your arms, or you're holding your watch in your bag, or it's on your ankle, or if it's on your other wrist, or any number of other potential clangers, i presume it won't work correctly? Or at least won't measure consistently with when it is on your usual arm? And come to that: how does it 'know' what's right? Does it get used to a usual arm swing and sort of 'work it out' for the individual? If so, i'm surprised it can do that without some form of manual calibration.. although my old 620 had a go at that for treadmill running.
I tried running (walking) a few experiments: a set distance (around 1km) with watch on usual arm, on other arm, on leg, on other leg, in hand, in bag, and strangely they're all off by around a constant +/-10%... even the same distance with watch on the same arm. Starting and stopping 'snaps' are difficult as it seems to only refresh when it wants to, but over 1k (just under 1000 steps) i thought that would be lost in the wash.
So....I'm still none-the-wiser as to how it actually works.
Could someone enlighten me so that i can ensure (when i actually want it to function) i don't somehow restrict its functioning?

  • It works using the acc and a load of really clever algorithms developed over years. It's not perfect but can detect most situations pretty well and fairly accurately.
