My GPS on Garmin 645music keeps dropping out on my runs and therefore my recorded pace is wildly erratic. I have had watch for 2 months and has been fine but last couple of weeks I find it really hard to track my pace when it’s jumping so wildly. I use the standard NORMAL GPS which has been fine up until now. I am training for marathon so monitoring pace has become really important and this GPS is causing real issues - has anyone else encountered this and if so how did you sort?

  • GPS can vary due to atmospheric conditions.  Garmin tends to be at least as good as other brands if not better but lots have people have found that the instantaneous speed is often erratic.  Sometimes you can make it better by turning on GLONASS, which I run with all the time.

  • How badly is it dropping out? Can you share a link to an activity? If it's just a weak signal or very short dropouts, you could use lap averages, or try a Connect IQ app with pace averaging/smoothing. There are a few data fields you can add to a built-in app, or you might prefer an app like Race Screen or Peter's (Race) Pacer, which additionally allow you to align your distance with markers on the race course.

My GPS had generally been fine, though I use a Stryd Live foot pod for more accurate pace and distance when I need it. But I had trouble acquiring a lock a couple of days ago, and I can't even download a GPX file for my most recent run because there is no GPS data whatsoever. I tried GPS + GLONASS, but nada. I have the non-music 645 on firmware 6.40.

  • It seems the GPS on mine is just completely dead. Reverting to the old reliable standby of firmware 4.20, which required a factory reset, did not help. Support had me delete the RemoteSW folder containing the EPO.BIN file, but that didn't help either. I was out of warranty, but because of the nature of the issue, they're sending me a replacement.

Update on this - Garmin suggested I do a factory re-set on watch; I did that and thankfully on my last couple of runs it appears to have sorted my pace & GPS issues. Data was of course wipe from my watch but all data remains on the app
