Forerunner 645 Music Blue Triangle

Yesterday, while being in a meeting and trying to check my watch for the time, my Forerunner 645 Music displayed a blue triangle. While I went in the meeting, the watch was simply displaying the standard watch face - i.e. I was not doing any sports or tracking any work-out. I cannot get rid of the triangle. The watch doesn't respond to anything, except holding the power button for fifteen seconds. When I do that, the display shuts off, and when I press the power button again, it comes on again, but immediately the triangle is displayed and it doesn't get past it. The 'hard reset' described elsewhere on the forum (powering on the watch with the two right buttons pressed in and waiting for beeps to release them) doesn't work either. Hooking the watch up to a computer doesn't do anything. I've tried using both a Mac and a Windows PC. All software on my computer, phone and on the watch was up to date. I'm not sure whether it's relevant, but at the moment this happened, the Bluetooth on my phone was off. Next to that, I wasn't using the watch for music - I've never even used that feature. (Simply listing it here because I saw on the forum that this might have been of influence.)

I've contacted support and the first reply was to download something called 'Web Updater' and hook up the watch to my computer. This software (from 2012!) does not recognize the watch, as I suspected. The computer simply does not register anything connected. I called support after this and they told me to send the watch to Garmin. They said I will probably get a replacement, but this will take approx. 20 (working) days. As I'm in the middle of a marathon program, 20 days of not tracking pace, cadence et cetera is very unfortunate. Does anyone have an idea what this might be and whether or not there are things left for me to try? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1455088.jpg
  • If a factory reset doesn’t work (and you say it doesn’t) then it suggests the watch is broken, sorry.
  • I'm sorry but I'afraid there isn't anything you can do as I had the same trouble on my 645: I was home doing nothing and I noticed the blue triangle, I tried everything to recover it but nothing worked. In my case I think this happened during an update (I have discovered after there was a new update ready that day), the watch was connected to my home wifi and the automatic update was on, probably something gone wrong during the process and the device got freezed. I saw other times the blue triangle when the watch was autoupdating but after few seconds the watch returned to normality. I had to replace it and now I keep the new one with the automatic update off.
  • Thanks for your help, guys. I've tried hard resetting the watch a couple of times more, but it just doesn't respond. I can only switch it off and on (in the latter case the only thing I see is the triangle). Just for information, I'll post the next steps below, so people experiencing this in the future know what will or might happen.

    - I'll be shipping the watch back today (having to pay for the registered mail delivery myself!) and I'm afraid I'm going to have to get an in-between watch for the 20 working days Garmin claims to need to replace it.
    - Garmin writes they are going to send a 'newly overhauled' watch, which I read as 'refurbished'. (Insane, given that I have paid almost 450 dollars for a watch that worked for barely 3 months.)
    - After receiving the new watch, I'm just going to cross my fingers it won't lock-up again while running a race, because reading the other forum posts of people experiencing this problem, I've kind of lost my faith in this watch. (I know it doesn't help anything, but I've run for years using a FR230 and I have never ever experienced any lock-ups or other problems. Wishing now I'd kept it...)
  • An update: I have received a new (or 'newly overhauled'?) watch from Garmin. Although they said it might take up to 20 working days, I got it within a week from sending the faulty watch. The new watch works well and I hope it will continue to do so. Does anyone know whether it is possible to 'back up' your watch settings and put them back on? I have to set up the new watch all over, which is not a big problem, but having a back up of the settings, apps et cetera would certainly make things easier.
  • Here's a post I made on the subject a while back, which combines some things Garmin tells you and some things that Garmin doesn't tell you. I wrote it for 935, but it should hopefully work for 645 Music as well.

You'll have to connect the watch to a PC/Mac using the USB cable, to copy files back and forth. (If you have a Mac, you need https://www.android.com/filetransfer/)

Note that FirstBeat data (VO2Max, Training Status, etc.) can't be directly copied. However, if you enable Physio TrueUp, FirstBeat may be automatically synced between watches for you.

Hope this helps in some way.

TL;DR You can back up everything up by copying the contents of the \GARMIN\ folder on the watch, but restoring data is a bit trickier. Some files go back to their original location, while other need to be copied to the \GARMIN\NEWFILES\ folder.

To me, the most useful thing to backup and restore below is CIQ apps and app settings (including all your favorite watch faces, data fields, etc.). The other useful thing is activity settings (including data field layouts).

You should also be able to backup WORKOUTS\ and restore it to its original location, for programmed workouts.

Several settings can’t be preserved either. (There’s some data which is not even accessible via the file system exposed by USB.)

Based on this Garmin support article and my own experience (reset to factory several times), this is what you can recover/copy, and how. You can back everything up by copying the whole folder structure, but you can’t just copy it back onto your new watch.

Some things can be recovered by copying the files to the NEWFILES folder, others by copying the files to their original locations.

    Copy to NEWFILES:
    Locations
Copy contents of LOCATIONS to NEWFILES

    Totals
Despite what the Garmin support page says, totals apparently can’t be restored

    Custom activities/activity settings
Copy contents of SPORTS to NEWFILES

This can result in your activity list looking a little funny if you had any custom activities – might have to reorder activities until the list looks right again.

    Records
Copy contents of RECORDS to NEWFILES

    Some settings
Copy contents of SETTINGS to NEWFILES
Most settings, like wifi networks, and bluetooth pairings, will not be preserved.

    Copy to original location:
    Activity history
    Copy ACTIVITY

Connect IQ Apps and app settings
    Copy APPS

    Courses
    Copy COURSES

    Segments
    Copy SEGMENTS and SEG_LIST
