Interval training with Forerunner 645

So, when I sync intervals to Garmin Connect, is there NO recognition at all of the interval? I created an interval workout in Connect, with delineated rest, and it's included in the average. It's always been like that (dumb - but I get it - the Garmin product managers are truly not great at their jobs) but on my 910xt it would at least mark laps based on my intervals, so each interval - rest period would automatically get delineated as a different lap in Connect, that didn't even happen for me this morning with the 645. Is there a setting for this? Maybe a Connect IQ app that does a better job?

Even Strava figured out and marked the laps, allowing me to do the math and figure out my actual pace. It's just something that would be so easy for Garmin to do. I just shake my head at the fact that I created the workout in the Garmin ecosystem, loaded the workout to, and recorded on, a high end Garmin device, yet Strava does a better job analyzing the data. Am I doing something wrong?
  • Can you post links to your Garmin and Strava activities, please?

Something doesn't seem right here, because Strava "laps" should be based wholly on the laps from your activity (while Strava "splits" are either 1 km or 1 mi, and calculated on Strava's side.) So I don't see how your activity can have the correct laps on Strava and not Garmin. I'm assuming you're syncing Strava from your GC account, and not recording the workout on two different devices or anything like that.

BTW, I totally agree about how it sucks that interval workouts aren't really supported in post-activity analysis, other than having dumb laps with no information about the workout itself (like rest vs active periods).

Also, if you use the GC website, you may find the following "Summarize Splits" bookmarklet useful. You can select a number of laps -- e.g. all your active laps -- and click a link to see the averages for only the selected laps.

When you said that, I dug through the Garmin activity a bit more on the web site instead of in the Android app, and found the "Laps" in Strava are listed under "Splits" In Garmin Connect, and that does break out the rest period. IT's still not super smart. I don't have my activity available publicly, but that does have something at least close enough to do some math.

Thanks for that link as well, that is a really cool little tool.
  • No worries! Sometimes I used to export my splits to CSV and do the math in Excel, but that tool helps me avoid that.

Yeah, Garmin uses "laps" and "splits" pretty much interchangeably (at least in running), so when I joined Strava and saw that it used laps and splits slightly differently, it threw me off initially.

If you ever want to do even more in-depth analysis, https://runalyze.com is pretty nice. It can sync with your Garmin account and show you a lot more information (like fastest sub-segments by distance or time; e.g. fastest 1k/2k/5k during a race). My favourite feature is the ability to arbitrarily chop up your activity into laps by distance or time after the fact. So if I run a stamina workout (like 3k, 1k, 1k), I can manually press "lap" after each interval, but I can also go into runalyze after the fact and see the 1k "sub-splits" within the longer 3k interval. Or I can easily compare the first half of a long run with the second.
