Expected battery life

I bought a 2nd hand Forerunner 55 to my son. He used it for a couple of days, with ~ 1 hour of gps activity per day and the Big Easy CIQ watchface (the one I also use on my fr965) and he gets only 2 days of battery life. Is this what's expected? I mean I don't know how long the previous owner used it but given it was released only 3 years ago I would've expected more.

  • My bad, I should've confirmed.(I've been using another app that does this for a non-Garmin device)

Not really sure why a watch face would have such a significant impact. Would need to see its layout or go through the code to see what its doing(probably not possible).

Can you confirm that its the BIG EASY (MobileDriveway)? I might test it out on my FR55.

  • Yes, exactly that one

  • Have you tried contacting the developer by any chance?

According to the dev (from a review):

Battery usage in this app is meticoluosly optimized - most users (including myself) report that it is same or even better then with stock watch faces. To further improve battery life, please disable "Always ON seconds"...

It seems it might be tied to the refresh rate.

  • Yes I asked him if he heard about problems on fr55, but he said I'm the 1st to report. We also use the same WF on fr245, fenix6, fr965 and have no battery issues. I thought it might be because of the weak hardware of fr55, but then probably others would notice it too. Will be interesting to see your experience.

  • My watch is about three years old. I run about 1hour daily. First year I charged them almost every week, then it started to degrade, a month ago I had to charge them every day. Last week I replaced the watch with refurbished one and it is still 50% after 4 days.

  • Can you see which firmware version is on your refurbished watch? (Menu > System > About)

  • Good, so it's the latest. Then maybe you really gained some battery life by getting a new battery. Though I'm a bit skeptical. Do you have the same watchface with the same settings that you had on the previous watch?

  • When I just received the first (then new) watch I experimented with their 'marketplace' apps and watch faces just to prove for myself that they are worthless and I reverted to the default one with the big HH:MM. I see no difference between old and refurbished watches at all. I also have some encouraging experience with my son's Venue. He smashed his watch a couple of years ago and I purchased a refurbished replacement for the first time. He's lost his sports enthusiasm and is not a very active user anymore, maybe for this reason he still charges his refurbished Venue once per 10 days.

  • Tell me please, is your refurbished watch suitable for swimming?

The local repairman warned me that it would be impossible to seal it so that it could be used for swimming.

I wonder how you are doing with this?
