Forerunner 245 vs old Fenix 3?

Now the 245 is on sale on Amazon, I'm getting tempted! I've been using a slightly battered Fenix 3 HR for a couple of years and as far as I can see it does everything I could ever want, the usual metrics, basic nav, hr etc.

Is there anything, other than smarter and faster menus that I'd gain from upgrading? I'd love to know people's thoughts.

Any cleverer widgets or watchfaces I wouldn't get on the fenix? Any cleverer running data screens or fields than I'm used to?

Is it much smaller than the fenix? I quite like the bulky feel of this old thing.

  • I doesn't see in what is acceptable spend money to buy worse model than you have. But it's your money.

  • It's hard to overcome that new gear fever isn't it?? Hahaha I know how you feel, man!

I, personally, think that size/weight doesn't do that much of a difference in you getting the 645 or not.

You'll get used to it, and maybe even like the smaller/lighter package of the FR series (not to mention it will look good either with leather or rubber bands).

If the 645 fits your everyday needs, by all means go for it!

  • My Fenix 3 HR started giving issues recently and I used my wife's 645 Music the last few days. So herewith my views.

    - Map features are about the same on both.

    - Both support running dynamics, important for me

    - 645 has garmin pay. not set up yet but nice if you stop for groceries/coffee after a run

    - Menu on the 645 does feel faster that the 3HR.

    - I haven't really noticed any major features I am missing at the moment and wouldn't mind getting the 645. Will update if I find anything.

  • I did eventually buy the 645 and found it way too small after the heft of the Fenix 3. Something great about the delicate design though, I was very impressed, but after being so used to the Fenix it just felt girly on my wrist! Menus feel like an upgrade, just a little slicker and faster.

I also tried running with it on one wrist while wearing the Fenix 3HR on the other, and found the GPS results exactly the same, even 8 miles in the mile markers were happening at the exact same time!

I sometimes map routes out using dynamic.watch and there's one benefit for the 645 here - dwMaps actually overlays Google Maps images over the route, whereas on the 3HR there's not enough processing power for that so it's just the breadcrumb trail to follow.

Garmin workouts, such as pre-defined intervals etc don't work with the Fenix 3, so that's another win for the 645.

And music of course, but I always carry my phone, so that makes no difference to me.

I wore the 645 for one run, and sent it back. I actually got lucky on a Fenix 5x Sapphire on eBay for £180, then sold the 3HR for £100. The 5x allows map overlays on navigation routes, and most importantly Garmin workouts, plus it feels natural on my wrist after so long with a Fenix 3.
