Garmin Forerunner 245 - GPS Accuracy 2020

Hi all,

I’ve searched for similar topics but couldn’t find anything recent.  I bought a Garmin Forerunner 245 this week and have not been impressed by the GPS accuracy when viewed on a map.  Reading old forum posts from early 2019 a number of posters suggested that GPS accuracy issues might be to do with the move to a new chipset.  It’s now the end of March 2020 and I’m wondering if things have improved with the latest firmware?  Mine is up to date but I’m wondering how accurate I should really expect it to be?  I’ve added some photos from the Garmin Connect app where I view my activities.  I find that I’m off the road/path more than I’m actually on it!  I’d expect to be ‘off track’ a bit, but not the majority of the activity.  Or am I being too picky?  Should I not be zooming in this much?  Just trying to work out if this is the norm or if I have a defective unit and need to send back.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, thanks for the message.  Sounds promising!  Will give this a go and will report back.

    Cheers,

  • Posted this on the new firmware thread but thought I’d add here as an update to my original posts:

”I’ve had this watch (245 non-Music) for a few weeks. I made a thread the other day about the poor accuracy when viewing on a map. Since this firmware update it’s even worse! I’m literally never shown on the road I’m on. Sometimes I’d estimate from the map that I’m up to 10 metres off the road in the middle of a field or river. The terrain is always mixed - sometimes open, sometimes by houses, sometimes by hedges but I’m always mapped completely off the road when my activity was always on it. Today’s ride, after a mile or two I am never on the road at any point! The return route (and and back) puts me even further off!”

  • Actually, just looking again and the mapping seems more accurate on Garmin Connect than when it syncs to Strava. Why might that be? I’m on the road much more on Garmin Connect maps. Do the maps not quite match up when they sync?

  • I’ve also recently bought a 245 and it seems considerably less accurate than simply using the Strava app on my phone. Is that normal?
