Extremely Low Calorie Burn - Running

Hi there

Just got a question about how the calories burned are calculated? I use my Garmin as a rough guide on what to eat in a day but recently the numbers have seemed very very low!

For example, yesterday I walked 10k steps during the day. I then went out for an easy run in the evening, 8 miles at 7:30min/mile pace. As it was easy, my HR stayed around 130ish the whole time. I got back, and by the very end of the day when I went to bed, garmin connect said I only had 300 active calories for the day. Given that it thinks my resting expenditure is 1600, that means I could only eat 1900 for the day. This is definitely not a one-off occurrence, it's happened a lot lately!

Could my burn really be that low, or is the 235 miscalculating it because my HR is low?

Any advice appreciated!!!

  • .63 x weight

Your 'active calories' for running each of the miles is .63 x BodyWeight(lbs) at least according to some study cited by runners world. Most everything I have seen points to the same. http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning

So for example 8 mi x .63 x 100lbs would be 504 active calories (plus extra for your regular basal metabolic burn)

This is pretty much regardless of your heart rate. So yeah, it is miss calculating. If you are a great runner with a very efficient stride and good surfaces I would imagine you could be a bit lower than that.

If you reach threshold and vo2 max HR then there is a post exercise recovery after burn that burns some % more of total calories (5-20%???).
  • Same issue

I am noticing the same thing. Did about 4.3 miles on the mill this morning with less than 400 calorie burn.

A 2 mile walk shows less than 100 calories burned.

Extremely low for me I think at 6' 1" 170 lbs I would calculate the run cals at around 480 and the wal around 240

Is there something I am missing??
  • Just looking at your run - 170lbs x .63 x 4.3 = 460cal of 'active' calories burned....so as far as estimates go... its in the ballpark - but yeah 'off' (13% error from estimate...to another estimate)

Personally when I was looking at calories burned and consumed... I just would always just use the rough guide of 100cal per mile (i'm 160-170#) - and just go with that. Quick and easy check of garmins data - sometimes I would edit if 'off'.

Things like walking/mowing/short-family-bikeride... etc...i'd ignore since over the course of a week....it averages out to be "normal life" for the most part.
  • It is pretty close for an estimate. I just switched to the FR235 from the vivoactive HR and the differences are kinda wide

I probably just need to retrain my brain to not dwell on it too much

I also assume the more I use the 235 it may alter a bit as well

I am guessing that maybe the apps also include the resting cals in their calculations giving a higher calorie burn number.
  • 233 calories burned during a 10k run

Today I ran 10k in 52 minutes and used a Garmin chest strap for HRM. I weigh 165 lbs and average HR during run was 155. but calories burned during running are 233 (see attached). How is this possible? very disappointed.

I bought the FR235 2 weeks ago, and thinking of returning it. Other issues are : wrist based HRM is generally delayed by 10-14 seconds and watch has to be uncomfortably tight (it leaves vivid marks on wrist) to be fairly accurate. sleep tracking is ridiculous : if i leave the watch on table, it thinks i am sleeping, i know it is based on "movement", but you would think Garmin engg would be smart enough to program the firmware to use the HRM to figure out if watch is on the wrist or not. I have a feeling most of the data is all mumbo-jumbo, created as a marketing gimmick and to make the data junkies happy.

I have sent an email to Garmin support, will update this thread when i hear back from them.
  • What is the max running heart rate set on the watch? Can you link to the activity on Connect?

Max HR is set to 178 (i am 42 yo). How to link to the activity?
If you meant if the Connect app is sync'ed to the watch , then yes, that's how i was able to get a screen shot of the activity, see attachment to my prev post.
  • To post a link to the activity you need to go to the Garmin Connect website, view the activity full screen and then post the URL that is shown in the address bar. You also need to unlock it so we can see it, there is a padlock top right of the activity.

If you post that we can see the drtials details of the run and see if there are any issues which might account for the calorie count

Thanks for the info, here is the link, open for everyone : https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1713265318
  • Thanks for that, it's weird. You are showing mostly in Zone4 HR but the TE is 1.0 which seems wrong. Hopefully someone like Tim will be along soon to cast an eye over it.
