Screen crack

So last week I noticed what I thought was a very small scratch on my screen... didn't think much of it, but then I was wiping the watchface with my shirt, and crack, screen splits all the way across the bezel. The 'scratch' must have been a small hairline crack.

Very disappointed, as I've never cracked a watch face before. Yes, I've banged it on stuff before... who doesn't? Not the quality I expect from a $200+ watch, as I've had $40 timex watches take far worse impacts than anything this Garmin has ever experienced. The $100+ non-warranty repair just isn't worth it, IMO, for a watch you can pick up new for $180ish now.

Anyone else feel this glass is too fragile for the purpose it's designed for?

    As have I, but it shouldn't be assumed that everyone else does. Especially in situations such as while I was crossing the road, and some rude jackass (I'll assume unintentionally) pushed the end of the handle bar of his bicycle into my watch, and the watch face took the brunt of it.

    Thank heavens for screen protectors, for those of us who just don't do such a good job ourselves keeping the faces of our watches safe from impact!

    I don't. I've used a FR235 for a year and haven't cracked it, although I did put a couple of nicks in its bezel. I've used a FR630 for a month now, and even though I have to interact with its touch screen (a whole lot more than I needed to keep the FR235's screen exposed), and I haven't cracked it either, even after the incident with the bicycle – and I don't think the FR630 has a tougher screen than the FR230/235.
  • Tough luck :-(
    It's too late now and I'm not sure it would have made a difference but I'm very happy with the Brotect AirGlass I got for my FR235 for €4, can't see it at all, doesn't scratch (unlike the plastic Savvies) and doesn't attract too many fingerprints. Actually it might still help your FR230's screen not get worse ?

    Yeah, impossible to know if a protector would have saved it from this crack. I just really don't recall ever smacking it on anything that hard in the 1+ year I've had it. It's pretty annoying to look at it, so no way I'm gonna keep using it long-term. I'm sure the water-resistance is shot now, short of having Garmin fix it.

    I respect that it's entirely up to you to decide whether to:
    • cast the watch aside and write off its residue value as-is;
    • pay $100 for the repair (as a response to the state of the watch here and now, as opposed to pondering how it came to be); or
    • buy a new device (with careful selection on the basis of the toughness of its screen against impact, without additional protective measures).
