Frequent HR spikes early in the run despite wetting strap thoroughly. Never used to happen prior to firmware upgrade 3.30 on the 230, and never with prior Garmin devices (220, 310xt, 305).
Interestingly, the HR monitor seems to work just fine prior to the run while relatively at rest.
I also had pace problems with the new firmware. Whatever changes to the algorithm(s) were made, it seems there's less 'smoothing' and/or less exclusion of irregular data points.
I doubt this is related to the firmware. I would bet its the strap starting to fail. Do you have a friends strap you can borrow to see if you can rule out wear and tear?

Could be the strap (HRM3) as you suggest, though the timing of its failure would be coincidental with the change in firmware.
I have an old HRM2 strap that I used today with no issues. After a few more runs, it should be clear if it's a strap issue.
