Who else returned their 225 the day this was announced?

<- This guy.

My main complaint with the 225 was GPS accuracy. It just didn't work for me on PNW trails. I'm hopeful that the addition of GLONASS improves the 235's accuracy, and it is my understanding that this is often the case for those of us in the North.

But even without the GPS issue, I probably would have returned the 225 in favor of the 235. It's a joke how much richer the feature-set is on the 235 with the Connect IQ, larger / four-field display, multi-mode, and scores of other improvements. And all of this after a four month 225 life cycle? Ridiculous, even by Garmin's standards.
  • It's unusual I agree for a watch to essentially see a newer version within this timescale.

However there are quite a lot of unknowns here like when will this actually be released, how good is the optical HR and indeed issues like you mention with GLONASS.

Experience with the 920 is that GLONASS support can help a bit but is not some miracle cure for places where getting a good GPS signal is difficult and indeed, in some cases, people have suggested it can make things worse.

My general advice would be that if you have a 225 and it is working for you then stick with it for now. After all return it now and you will have no watch at all - probably for at least a couple of months.

This is true. REI shows a "Ships within 30 days" banner for the 235, but I'm thinking that may be generic for all preorders. Holabird shows December 15th.

I have a 305 that I've reverted back to in the meantime. I personally would consider it unethical to wait and return the 225 the same day I get the 235, given that it was the announcement that sealed my decision. However, I can understand others not being certain of their decision given the unknown quality of the in-house Garmin optical HR.
  • I bought my watch 4 months ago for €299 - Now it's worth less than €180 because a new one can be picked up for less than €215

Garmin should have some sort of upgrade program for users like myself! :o
  • It's a big difference between the price in US and price in EU if you take into consideration the currency.

Isn't Garmin building devices also in Europe?

Pretty damn annoyed that my 225 is outdated. Would consider upgrading if 225 owners were given generous rebates (I feel like a guinea pig, not cool. A rebate would restore some goodwill).

At least I've managed to downgrade the 225 to 2.40 so that it actually works...

Please, Garmin, rebate for 225 owners! Everywhere, not just in the US! If so, you can have some more of our money. If not, no dice.

    Returning?

What do you mean by returning? Can you return your watch and get your money back or something?

I hate Garmin for not having a multi-sport option for 225. I bought it late august, and now 235 is the watch i wanted 225 to be. Because I am angry on Garmin, I think I just will wait until they announce one of their hig-end watches with optical HR. Optical HR is critical for me. I like the 225, but it should be an "other" option on it.
  • How can you be angry at Garmin for not putting cycling on the 225 which they sell as a running watch? The 225 was never advertised with cycling on or even 'coming soon'. I think you can be annoyed they released the 235 so soon after the 225, but not at the 225 not having cycling on.

by the way, I suggest you put the 225 on eBay and get a 235, I don't reckon the 225 will ever get a cycling mode

They are annoyed because the same range watch (235) is being released months after with that exact functionality, not because they were misled about the 225 having cycling. Also, if you're still within the return window on the 225, you should absolutely return it, not resell it on eBay. It was Garmin's choice to replace the model several months after introducing it and it is your choice to return it if you so choose.

As for "we don't know what it's going to be like!" argument, well sure, we definitely don't. However, if it turns out to be awful, you can just repurchase the Garmin 225.

All of this assumes you either have another device to use for the time being or don't need a device.
  • Don't forget if you want to use a 225 for recording a bike ride you can and it will work fine. You can change to display speed rather than pace if you prefer.

Cycling "functionality" in a 235 will be little more than enabling uploading a cycle to GC with cycle already set. OK there is a speed/cadence sensor support but if you are that into your cycling maybe the 235 won't be a great choice anyway as never found a watch that great for cycling - bit dangerous keep looking at it and hard to see anyway...

    Will go for 235

I have change my mind and will go for the 235 and sell my 225. The 235 is a major upgrade and it has all the things that's important for me, and it probably will be long time until they get optical HR on a more high-end watch. If I wait a year or more the 225 will be worth even less than it is now, so it is maybe best to sell it as soon as I get the 235. I bought the 225 late august, not through Garmin, so I can't return it, but I hope i can get some money out of it.
