Will vivosmart receive an update for sleep tracking?

Hi there,

I have both a fitbit inspire hr and a vivosmart 4. While they are both good at heart rate tracking and I like more the aesthetics of the tracker and the app of the vivosmart 4 (it has more features too), I think I will stick to fitbit because of the poor sleep tracking capability of the garmin. I'm not merely referring to sleep stages, but it seems that the garmin can't even tell if I'm sleeping or watching TV, or doing breakfast sometimes. This is happening almost every day and it's rather annoying, because I'd like to track how much of real sleep I'm getting every night. The funny thing is that if I display the movement chart, it's rather clear when you weren't actually sleeping. So I was wandering if we will ever get a software update to fix this, other than this issue I like this tracker.

  • Thanks for your comment, I currently have a Fitbit charge 3, And I got it for the sleep tracking. I have sleep apnea so it’s very important to me to have accurate sleep tracking. There are many things about the Garman that I prefer, and I would love to get it, but if you say that the sleep tracking isn’t nearly as good, accurate then I think I need to stick with Fitbit. Is that a fair statement from what you said? Thanks

  • If you suffer from sleep apnea maybe you can benefit from the SpO2 sensor of the vivosmart (oxigen % of your blood). I've red somewhere that if this parameter drops significantly during night it means that you may have suffered from sleep apnea. Be aware that using this feature (SpO2 measurements during night) cuts the battery life by half, so you have to charge the tracker every three days. Other than that I can confirm that if you watch TV or perform any other low movement activity before/after going to bed, the garmin will count it as REM or light sleep. I think it's also less accurate in detecting when you wake up during night.

  • My SpO2 sensor is *really* spotty.  Maybe I just need to shave my wrist or something but it just shows a small cloud of points most nights, barely covering a couple hours.

  • The Garmin Fenix 6 recently received an update for the sleep formula and it is now based on Firstbeat. I hope this will either be updated to the Vivosmart 4 or a part of Vivosmart 5 if it ever gets released.

I am using the Vivosmart 4 for sleeping, during the day etc, and other more advanced Garmin for running etc. Love using the Vivosmart for sleeping since I can hardly notice it, but the sleep data isn’t good and I really hope Garmin can give us an update if they don’t want to loose customers to other trackers.
