Bluetooth cuts out when GPS activity starts

Hello. I found a good deal on a Garmin Vivoactive 5 music to replace my old Vivoactive 3.

The display and general functionality are a major upgrade on the 3, so far I’m pleased with it but I have one issue I can’t seem to resolve.

I use my watch 99% for outdoor running only, I just want some music, hit run and track my activity. On my previous watch I always started the music playlist just before I start the run but in the 5 I start the music, they go to run and the second it starts searching for GPS the music stops and I’ve no way of reconnecting it, it just fails to connect to the AirPods. I’ve search and it seems a common problem, various suggestions to remove headphones and pair again (done that) or connect music after I’ve started run but I’d rather not do this nor should I have to.

It seems the GPS interferes with the Bluetooth. Has anyone else had this issue on a Garmin and found a fix? Thanks

  • I've the watch just for a week or so. Today i tried to go out for a run while listening to music. But as mentioned here as soon you are pressing the run button its disconnect the BT connection. The latest version 10.20 is installed. My previous VA4 did not had this issue.

  • I'm having the same problem with a brand new vivoactive 5 connected with Shokz earphones. The Bluetooth connection is disconnected as soon as the GPS signal is present.

  • I'm super surprised Garmin hasn't fixed this. And I'm disappointed.

I have found that 1 of these 2 things usually works: either turn off the watch completely and then turn it back on OR play the music for at least a handful of minutes (the longer the better) before pressing the button for your run.

It's crappy to need to figure out a way to have an expensive watch that's supposedly made for what we're asking it to do to actually DO THE THING it's supposed to do. I would've returned my watch if that'd been an option since this is why I got this watch to begin with....

  • I still having the issue if my phone is in BT distance of my watch. If not then it works fine. My LG earphones connected and stays connected with my watch.

  • I solved the issue by deactivating the GPS on the watch (Run -> settings -> GPS -> GPS only or OFF) and reactivating it again.

  • Clearly reading this Garmin have not fixed the issue had my vivoactive 5 for a month and music stops every time I start a run...might go back to my 3 just for running, but I really shouldn't have to.. other than this issue I am loving the upgrades on the 5 from the 3

  • I'm having the same issue and I specifically bought this watch to run with music, but without my phone. I tried the workaround someone suggested to listen to a couple of songs then activate the running app with GPS and it worked, but then when I stopped the running app and went to start it again the headphones disconnected.

  • Hi guys, I'm having the exact same issue, having moved from a Venu which had no problem (and could fit more music). I do hope Garmin fix this! I've just tried the fix suggested of deactivating GPS and reactivating it again, so I'll see if it works on my run tommorrow.

  • I wasn't able to resolve the issue, so ended up returning the Vivo Active 5 and getting a Venu 3S. I've had no issues with the Venu 3S.
