Maps for India and a bunch of other questions

I have had the vivoactive for a few years now, but never really used it, just about beginning to get serious about it.

1. Internetless Road Navigation - I would like to use my GPS receiver in the vivoactive device coupled with a mobile application that has maps for India cached offline and achieve road navigation.

  • Is this possible with vivoactive ?
  • If so, what maps can I purchase for India ?  Are these regularly updated ?

2. Internetless topographic navigation / trekking/ hiking - I need to import GPX files that has waypoints saved from treks in the Himalayas and use it for navigation.

  • Is this possible with vivoactive 3 ? I'm ok to use a mobile  phone app in conjunction, but of course I won't have internet
  • If I need a topographic rendering of such GPX files, what do I need to do ?

3. Internetless Livetrack - the livetrack is a cool feature, but of course it needs an internet connection. I need to make my location known to my family without internet.

  • What are the technical challenges for Garmin to use the satellite for uplinking such coordinates without internet ?
  • Are there garmin devices that have contraptions for uplinking gps coordinates that are downloadable via the internet by interested parties ?

4. Lastly, is there a garmin device that does these better than the vivoactive 3 music ?  What device would you recommend ? Battery life is an important consideration.

  • I cannot answer all the questions. Have a look at the ciq apps like https://apps.garmin.com/en-gb/apps/2750f280-82f4-4f21-a32c-57acc7ce4870 for maps and using GPX files. The app is called dwMAP but there is another one I can't remember.

You cannot uplink coordinates without a phone I think.

  • Hello .  Please see responses below:

    1. The vivoactive 3 does not support course guidance (with or without internet connection).
    2. The vivoactive 3 does not support topo map viewing (with or without internet connection).
    3. A Bluetooth connection to the Garmin Connect mobile app (which will need to use cellular data for GPS location and internet connection) is required for the vivoactive 3's LiveTrack feature to work.
    4. The Forerunner 945 LTE does support all of the 3 feature mentioned, but it only supports the LiveTrack feature (without a BT connection to the Garmin Connect mobile app) through an LTE subscription.  This LTE service is only available in limited countries/regions.  See below for more information on this.
