Random restart and data loss

So again today I work out click finish and save and then I get the dreaded random restart.  Soon as it happens I notice my step count is back to what it was 2 hours earlier.  I have done hard resets.  Updated software.  This isn't  the first time this has happened.  I was initially happy with my purchase but over the course of 10 months I am really starting to hate my watch. I am always worried about resets and losing activities because it will reset without warning.

I definitely would not recommend a vivoactive3 music to anyone at this point.

  • I feel your pain. In the 4 or 5 years I used my VA1, this only happened to me one time and it was right after a sync in the morning. I only lost about 200 steps. In the 5 months I've had my VA 3, it has happened 2X. Once where I lost about 400 steps another time when I lost about 9,000 steps.

That 9,000 step loss was a killer.

What I wonder is what role an IQ app or watch face might play in this.

  • POS did it again today.  at least it kept my steps but lost all my stats on a 12 mile run.  I hate this watch.

This is happening to me also and it is very frustrating.  It has happened at least four times in the past month.  I have a watch face that is not a built in but nothing else.  I have plenty of space and the watch is fully charged. I can't figure out why this is happening and when you just finished your steps for the day and are blocks from home and boom it's all gone you want to scream.  Especially when you are trying to keep a streak going and there is no way to correct the steps.

  • That has only happened to me once in just under 6 months. Fortunately, it happened in the morning so I was able to go out again in the afternoon and still achieve my step goal for the day.

Which watch face? Perhaps there's a common thread there. I'm using No Frills and it's been fine except for that one time.

My watch face is called Crystal.  I’ve had it a long time with no problems though and the rebooting only started recently.

  • I contacted garmin support and they gave me something to try that didn't work.  Now they are going to send a new watch since it still happened. I was just inside my warranty period.

This is what they had me try if you are interested.  Just use watch as normal after.

I would be happy to help you. I am sorry to hear this is happening. What software version is the watch is running on? It sounds like there may be some corrupt files that is causing this to happen. I recommend deleting some files from the device. Please plug the device into the computer and download Garmin Express using this link https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express/

    >>

Next add the device and sync using Express. Once that is done, please follow the steps below to delete some files. After the files have been removed, I recommend starting a walk activity and go for a small walk then save the activity to see if the device restarts again after deleting the files. Please let us know if this is still occurring.

You will need to delete the folders listed below: (Please note that this will get rid of all saved activities currently on the device that has not synced over to connect.)

    • Activity
    • Settings
    • Monitor
    • NewFiles
    • Remote SW

To delete the folders: Plug your device into the computer and follow the steps below.

    PC:

    • Click Window's start button
    • Click (My) Computer (This PC on Windows 8 or 10)
    • Double-click Garmin device drive
    • Double-click Garmin folder
    • Delete the Folders listed above
    • Right-click on Garmin device drive
    • Select Eject
    • Unplug device from computer

I also have this problem... what's more troubling is that my wife have the same watch and the watch reboots at the same time doing the same activity...

  • So garmin did warranty my old device and I have been on the new one for just about a month I think and this just happened again yesterday.  I told them this seems to be happening to a lot of people and  they tell me "This isn't really a common issue with the watch."  Yeah right.  maybe they should browse the forums they host.

  • My VA3 restarted yesterday during a treadmill activity for the first time. Never had that issue before.

I contacted garmin support about it and they suggested i delete watchfaces and apps I don't use, cause it may be caused by those.
