Cycling and step count

Hi - is there really no way to get steps while cycling? I cycle to and from work several times a week and I don't think I get a single step during those rides. I simply can't make my 10k daily step counts on the days that I ride due to the time it takes and that really annoys me, especially as I am working out way more on that bike than I would just walking around the block to get my steps!  I'm not suggesting a step a cycle or anything, but surely there's a way for Garmin to calculate an equivalent step count per X pedal strokes etc?

  • That's exactly what I said, "this old post". I just happend to receive an email on it and remembered the discussion on this from a few years back. Let me know how the pocket route works for you. I hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

  • Well, pedal strokes are about the same energy strokes as a step and actually likely more because of general gear levels and friction resistance even on downhills and flats (especially uphills). That being said, Fitbit recognizes this and counts pedal strokes as step equivalents. Garmin should allow a option to allow us to control if our pedal strokes are counted toward step goals or not. Make it a option in settings we choose. If Fitbit can do it certainly Garmin technically can as well.

Here is a workaround for you Garmin users....get and pair Garmin Vivoki. When riding your bike, put the unit in your pocket or on your shoe. I put it in my pocket and it works.

Garmin Devs, get with the times and allow this natively as a option to let US choose how we want to calculate pedal strokes! Your competitor, Fitbit, does this already!

  • You are spot on! I just rode 3 centuries back-to-back and had to wear my watch on my ankle for part of each day so I'd reach my step and stair goals. There was no way I was going to walk that much after such hard cycling days! That said, I wonder why I put so much emphasis on my daily goals. Maybe I should relax and not worry about it so much.

I didn't know about the Vivoki. It is an interesting solution.

  • Cool deal. I agree. Some like to look at daily intensity. I like just getting my steps equivalent credit all in one too...lol. Vivoki will do if you don't want to go to Fitbit (which does it all natively). :) Greg P.S. Garmin Devs...you listening?

  • This actually does not work.  I have tried this in the past.  I think it registered about 20 steps for a 15 mile bike ride and it didn't pick up my pulse well on my ankle.

  • I might agree, but a smart company like Garmin could at least present a step equivalent value or something like that in their stats. They really don't have to change anything... the data is all there.
