Garmin Pay trouble -- can't use it mid-activity?

I ran for around an hour and a half, consumed all the liquid I was carrying so stopped to buy chocolate milk -- paid for with the VA3m. Very convenient as I don't carry phone or cash.
I paused the run activity, went into Garmin pay via control panel, paid for the drink. No problems.
I tried to restart the activity but it had disappeared. All the widgets had been messed around and the stock Garmin stuff -- steps, intensity, etc. -- had reinstalled themselves. Steps widget showed approx 20000 but no sign of the run itself.
Sync with Garmin connect on the phone...no run activity.

Maybe it's necessary to save an activity before switching to Garmin pay? So it's ok to use it post-run but not mid-run.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

    A day later and the data has appeared. For some reason the Sync didn't work but after triggering another activity to sync with the phone, yesterday's data turned up.
    The watch must have auto-saved the activity data at the point I used Garmin Pay and quit the activity. The subsequent sync with Connect didn't work but the next activity shook the data loose.

    When you're in an activity and get to the widget loop with a right swipe, you get back to the activity with a left swipe. When you go to the circurcular control while in an activity (long press of button), you can use your wallet, and from there. a right swipe takes you back to the activity.

    I tried again and the watch works as described up until the point I make a payment (if I enter PIN but don't pay, it behaves ok). Once the transaction is complete I'm returned to the watch face and neither left nor right swipe have any effect; all I can do is swipe through the widget loop or press the button to start a new activity. The paused activity has been terminated by Garmin pay.
    Either Garmin pay is designed to work only after an activity or this is a bug.

    I had the same experience this week when I tried Garmin Pay in the middle of a run (the first time I have done so). It seems poor design if you can't use it in that way, as a key selling point is being able to buy something while you are out enjoying an activity. The first part of my run disappeared without any request of whether to save or discard it, but thankfully it did sync to my phone on my return home. Having my run split into 2 parts is annoying though!

    yep...but thats shout not be nessecary! 

    I decide to wait till next year before i buy a new garmin … or maybe an other brand when they have to solve enough issues if i read these forums

    Is this a VA3m specific problem?

    With my regular VA3, I did an 18k run three weeks ago, paid for a bottle of water around the 13k mark.

    The entire run registered uninterrupted.

    I've had this happen to me too. Stoped to get a can of coke mid ride, paused my activity and after payment it was stopped. Had to start another activity to continue tracking my ride and then stitched them together us9ing some 3rd party site after reading a thread around here. I guess I'll keep some cash around while out riding...

    Using Garmin Pay midway through an activity should not prevent you from resuming the activity.  We have an open ticket and hope to have a fix in an upcoming software update.
