Move IQ, GPS and distance.

Just noticed something funny today. I turned on autostart actvity to see what it would do. After walking for about 5 minutes to do some shopping a walking activity was indeed started.
It started at 5 minutes but at 0km, What i did not expect was this: after syncing with Connect later it had the entire route plotted out except for the first maybe 30 meters or so!
Apparently the watch is silently turning on GPS as soon as it detects you're walking.

Something to be aware of in terms of battery life, but it's actually a good thing, However it does not record the distance elapsed in those first 5 minutes, screwing up statistics.

I guess i should consider the distance not being recorded a bug?

This is not a bug. It's performing exactly as designed. You can set the time you want the auto-activity to start a walk or run and once the watch detects one of those activities is being performed and the set time elapses, then it will start recording as an activity from that point on.
  • Ok starting that activity after 5 minutes is ok, i have indeed set it to 5 minutes.

But what i meant to say is: it includes those 5 minutes as time elapsed, but it excludes the distance that is travelled in those 5 minutes.
Example (rounded numbers): when walking 800m in 10 minutes, it will start an activitity halfway as expected, but afterwards it tells me i have walked 400m in 10 minutes. The map is plotting the (almost) entire 800m though.

So that gives me the impression it is trying to include those 5 minutes retroactively in the activity, which is good, but forgets the distance somehow. It should either give me 800m in 10 minutes or 400 m in 5 minutes, not 400m in 10 minutes.
  • Well nevermind, was mixing things up.... Seems to be working fine afterall.

Not for me. I have exactly the same issue that you reported before. If I let Move IQ start an activity (e.g. walking) automatically, it buzzes me (after 5 minutes) to let me know it is starting, but it records the GPS track of the entire walk. However, only the distance walked after the 5 minute start delay is logged. For example, it recorded a couple of short walks I took this morning of about 900 meters. However, it logged one as 700 meters and the other as 200 meters!
  • This has been changing recently. First the buzzes no longer displayed the screen telling me that the VA3 was about to auto-start and activity (and giving me an opportunity to cancel). Then, a couple of weeks ago, the incidence of buzzing dropped radically, Since then, auto-start works poorly if at all. It didn't record a brisk 15-minute walk today at all, and last week it only recorded 10 min. (1 km) of an over 1 hr. (7km) Nordic walk.
