Sudden battery drop 100% to 0% + Steps & Calories widgets not working

I have had my VA3 for 4 days now. I love it, however, since yesterday, two weird things have happened. (The update to 2.80 happened 2 days ago. )

1) After charging to 100% yesterday, it suddenly dropped from 100% to 0%. Details below...

I did my first discharge-and-charge cycle yesterday. Charged it from about 18% to 100%. After that, at some point in time (perhaps a few minutes or hours later - I am not sure when), it suddenly was showing 0% battery charge. But it functioned fine, so I slept in the night deciding to look into this in the morning. Today morning when I woke up, it was shut off (due to zero battery). So I had to charge it back.
It has been fine since the charge today morning and it is showing the battery % correctly.

But I am wondering why it did that sudden 100% to 0% at some point immediately after the charge yesterday.

2) Since the charge to 100% today morning, it is not showing Steps and total Calories on their separate widgets. It shows 0 steps and 0 total calories respectively. However, it is correctly showing the Steps and Calories in the My Day widget, on watch faces, on the Garmin Connect mobile app.

I tried removing the widgets and adding them back but that didn't work (it still showed 0 on them).
So I decided to restart the watch (turn off and on) and then it has been fine.

I don't have any specific questions since the 2 things above are fine now. I just wanted to share what happened in case others have faced these too.

  • I had the same (point 1).
After charging the VA3 again, i shut down the device and did a reboot.
After the reboot was an info "update 2.80 installed" before the watchface was loaded.
The Update 2.80 was already installed before and also shown in system information.

Maybe the update was not really finished in background, i don´t know. But after the restart (not factory reset), it works well now.
  • After seeing odd things in the past with different Garmin devices I always do a hard reset immediately after an update installs.

Hi I have had my VA3 for a couple months and the only problem I had was the low vibration which did improve with the 2.70 update ( My alarm now wakes me) but this morning I woke to my watch turned off, when I turned it on the battery was at 1% but 6 hours earlier when I went to bed it was on 69%. I have never had this happen before and I'm not sure when my watch did the 2.80 update but noticed a couple days ago that it was on 2.80 and did the hard reset then. I have not changed any setting on my watch. I am charging now and will do a hard reset when fully charged. I also find after a hard reset my steps before the reset disappear from the watch after the reset but stay on Garmin Connect is that normal? Thanks for any advice.
  • Would someone mind explaining a hard reset, I have powered the watch off and back on, but is this considered a "hard reset" Thanks for any help.

Instead of turning off using the icon, a hard restart is where you hold in the side button for approximately 15 seconds. Your VA3 will turn off and start up on it's own.
  • I tried this and when I hold it down it does turn off, but not back on automatically. I have to press the buton again to turn it back on, but hopefully it will work. Thanks TMK17 for the response and help.

You shouldn't have to turn it back on manually. It should restart on it's own. I've seen it take up to 20-30 seconds for this to happen.
  • Thanks again TMK17, but I just tried again and held the button down for close to 30 seconds and it doesn't restart. I have to release the button and the push and hold it again for about a second to restart it.
