Scratched my screen :(

Had my VA3 for just over 1 week and already have a significant scratch on my screen. :(

It happened with a slight knock on a bench corner. Was very surprised to see the damage it did.

Pretty disappointed in myself and the gorilla glass as I have never scratched a previous Garmin device.

I guess screens are not covered by warranty?

  • It really sucks when that happens... I did it to my original VA when it was only like a month old and had to live with it until the VA-HR came out, and I vowed to never again make that mistake. It simply grazed my granite countertop when walking by and that was it; that's all it takes though with any watch. Gorilla Glass 3 is about as scratch resistant as it comes, with GG4 and GG5 being the soft ones that scratch easily. To answer your question, it is considered accidental damage and would not be covered under warranty.

    sorry :(
  • I agree, it sucks. My film screen protectors show a lot of would-be scratches. Sometimes credit card company warranties protect against accidental damage early on.
  • That sucks, really sorry for you and your VA3. Nowadays you have so many expensive gadgets for your active, outdoorsy lifestyle that I've made a habit of protecting every gadget with cases and screen protectors. It might spoil the aesthetics a little bit and make the device bulkier but put it this way... I've never ruined any of my devices ever, even my smart phones which have fallen on the asphalt as I was riding my bike. As for the VA3, I ordered a few Fenix 5 tempered glass protectors for it when it arrives next week.
  • Can't really make it out, as pic is blurry, but sorry to hear/see that. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but anything which is mobile and has a screen gets a screen protector. In the case of the VA3, it's not as if you're going to make the screen worse like is the case with decent screens like a AW3 or iPhone.

As you've probably realised, this is accidental damage, so not covered by warranty.

It's my understanding that the Fenix 5 protectors will not work as they are not the correct size. There are already VA3 specific ones available on eBay and likely elsewhere btw.
  • sorry about the scratch. that sucks. which watch face is that?

Hindsight is 20-20, but others will hopefully learn from your experience. In the nearly two years I've owned my FR235, I've had to replace the screen protector 5 or 6 times. I've had my VA3 for 5 weeks now and I'm on my 2nd protector. I seem to beat the hell out of my watches at work and I get scratches on the protectors constantly. Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. I recommend that everyone get one.

Yeah, mine was just a little graze on a granite top corner as well while I walked by. Will just have to deal with it until the VA5. :)

I have some VA3 tempered glass protectors on order form Amazon now, as I don't want to scratch it up anymore.

    That's a thought. I might look into that at a chance. :)
