Cannot Install Firmware Update

I've been checking in Garmin Connect Mobile on my phone since the update was announced, and have synced both ways (from the watch and from the app) but nothing has shown up. At first I thought it just wasn't available for me yet, then out of curiosity I installed Garmin Express on my Mac and it showed up immediately there in the install queue. The problem is the Mac doesn't detect my watch as a device, although it charges it fine using the Garmin supplied cable. I can swear it detected as a device fine a couple of weeks ago.

So now I'm in the situation that Garmin Express says there is an update but cannot talk to my watch from my laptop because the Mac doesn't even detect it as a device. And nothing shows up in the mobile app.

Anyone have any ideas?
  • With Garmin Express, maybe try turning the watch and then back on and try again. (maybe rebooting the mac at the same time). If you can't get that going, it will come OTA. But OTA, it might take a day for it to start, and at Bluetooth speeds, just the transfer can take a few hours.
  • Thanks. I am mystified by the Mac issue. Could it be the cable has gone bad so quickly? The contacts on the watch itself? I have rebooted both the Mac and the device and tried a different Mac but can't get the watch to be recognized as a device. Like I said it was being recognized fine a bit more than a week ago, back then I just thought of it as a nuisance but now I want it to be recognized. If it doesn't work at all, can I make a warranty claim?
  • The update finally showed up pushed via the phone app and Bluetooth, it took only a few minutes. Is there any reason other than this use case to care that it won't work via the laptop/cable route?
  • Also my VO2 Max in the app is still not updating, last value it shows in the graph is from 9/21, since then it has been updated twice on the watch itself.
  • These days most folks just get the updates from GCM, so I wouldnt worry about it. The only downside to GCM is that it updates the firmware at odd intervals (I had to open and close the app and sync few times to trigger it) and takes way longer to push to the watch because of Bluetooth vs USB.
  • I did the update from GCM last night - it took over an hour and the battery took a big hit (I'd say at least 30%). The watch restarted twice during that process. So if you're doing it via Bluetooth make sure you have plenty of battery and aren't going to do a workout soon.
