Garmin's new Running Power - coming to the VA3

For those who are into things like this, did you see that the new Garmin Running Power capability (like Stryd) is coming to the VA3, by virtue of the fact that the VA3 has a barometric altimeter in it.... You'd need either an HRM-TRI or similar strap, or a Running-Dynamics Foot Pod, and once the app or whatever (see video) comes out in November, all your running power dreams will come true:

I think it's awesome that this is coming out. Perhaps a novelty to some, myself included, it is still super cool IMO.

I still have my TRI strap from when I had the 920 bundle so this sounds like a plan to me.
  • I'm not totally sold on the concept of running power, but since I already have an HRM-Run and the VA3 I'm sure I'll play with it when they release it. What I want to know is if the running dynamics will also show up with the power in Connect.
  • Jumped on the Stryd train when it was first introduced. Very disappointed. I found HR to be much more meaningful to me. So it sits in a drawer. Being a body metrics running geek it became " much ado about nothing". If you watch Ray"s(DCRainmaker's) video you will see 2 devices and how they differ. If HR monitors varied that much they would be pretty meaningless. Would be willing to let the Stryd go- cheap. PM me if interested.
Living with the motto - nothing ventured something lost- I have ordered a MOTIV Ring activity tracker. Will report when I receive and test for a few days. Nick
  • I assume this won't work on VA3 with HRM-Run or TRI, since the watch doesn't support running dynamics.
  • The VA3 does not have any built-in running dynamics functions, but it will have Connect IQ SDK 2.4 which will give access to RD data to anyone capable of writing an IQ app. And since the power function will be technically a Connect IQ data field, there is no reason for the VA3 to not support it.

If you'll see the DC Rainmaker video, yes you'll see that the VA3, by virtue of its support of the 2.4 SDK of Connect IQ (as stated right above me), that if you use a VA3 and one of the Running Dynamics-capable units like HRM-TRI or the RD Footpod, yes you can get Running Dynamics data via a VA3.
  • While, like I said above, I've already got an HRM-Run strap that would allow me to use this data field when it comes out it's also got me reconsidering picking up an RD-Pod. I've been thinking about one to use with my 735 because I hate chest straps and, to my mind at least, the waist is a more stable body position than the chest for running dynamics. With this new Run Pow app it means that I'll have 2 devices it will work with.

Side note: Although I'm sure some are using the term out of force of habit the pedant in me requires me to point out that the RD-Pod is not a "foot pod" in that it doesn't go on your shoe but clips on the back of your shorts instead.

Not sure if I understood your intentions correctly, but if you're considering the possibility to have power data in the 735, then it's a no-go, because the 735 doesn't have barometric altimeter.
  • No I understand that I won't get power with the 735, but I'll still get the running dynamics. I can get them now with the HRM-Run strap that I already have but don't like using a chest strap so I rarely get those stats. With an RD-Pod I could get those stats more regularly but it would add even more value to the purchase being able to also use it with the VA3.
