Venu Software Version 6.90 Battery Drain

Have owned my Venu for about 2.5 years and generally had no issues with SW updates. After this latest version (6.90), my battery is dying in less than a day. I've tried power cycling/charging back to full with no luck. I have now factory reset my watch to see if this improves anything, and will report back in a couple days.

  • All good now, so maybe it was the age of my old Venu?

  • I’m sorry to hear of the battery drain issues that you’re experiencing.  Let’s start by power cycling (turning off and then back on) your watch.  If the battery drain persists and if you have any Connect IQ (CIQ) Content, especially watch faces, you may need to delete that content until the independent developer is able to update their app/watch face to function correctly (without causing a battery drain) with the new firmware version on your watch.  You can use any of the 3 FAQs below to uninstall the CIQ content.

How to Uninstall Connect IQ App Content Using the Connect IQ App

If you would like to submit feedback to the developer of the CIQ content, you can do so by clicking the link below and searching for the download page of the CIQ content.  In the bottom right corner of that page, you will find the option to contact the developer.

  • None of this works.

I use my watchface and it has worked for years. I control every line of source code, and it doesn't use HR/internet/weather/sensors to display. I have never had high consumption. Garmin did something wrong with the firmware in the 6.90 and 6.92 beta, so the device heats up in 6-8 hours. I can't think of any watches from Garmin that have burned the battery like that.

Okay. If none of this is working, then I need to find a solution. I found the 6.84 beta in the archives and found the 6.80 firmware to downgrade it. After the downgrade, of course the device wants to be synced and tries to use Bluetooth / Wifi to get the latest software. I allowed this and chose to install the update later. In the meantime, I looked at the battery consumption. With all apps and widgets installed the same way as before the downgrade, I got much better results. Okay. I know it works for 6.80. After midnight the device automatically installed 6.92 and still has normal consumption. Used the same clock interface - not a single update was done!

Summary: you don't need to change the device, you just need to downgrade. After this process something important is cleared in memory.

This got me thinking that every update from Garmin should be done along with a reset. Especially if you are using beta versions.

  • Hi, I received a brand new watch via warranty about a month or two ago. The past couple days, I've noticed ridiculous battery drain and did not use gps nor logged any activities. Currently on 6.90 software which was automatically installed. Can you please guide me to where you found the previous software links so I can downgrade my software? I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm so tired of Garmin botching the software updates. My last watch had to be replaced because of a software issue causing the touchscreen to stop working. Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you so much for the guidance. I really appreciate your help! Raised hands

Hi, do you know about any possibility to disable automatic firmware updates?

As far as I know it's not possible in the watch menu - so once you downgrade, in some time watch will automatically update back to the last version.

  • Not possible at all. If you are developer in Garmin, you have secret menu in GCM app, can disable updates download, so it will not download via Bluetooth, but possibly can download via Wi-Fi (f configured, of course).

  • So if I understand correctly, Garmin forces its Venu product to "upgrade" to a newer version of software - whether the bugs have been fixed or new ones introduced? I certainly understand that it simplifies Garmin's ability to support its software by keeping folks on the same (or nearly same) firmware version. But that presumes that each forced upgrade is flawless ... which is rarely if ever the case.

Am I misunderstanding something about how this works? Even Apple, Microsoft, Android, and others don't force hardware to upgrade against the device owners' wishes. They simply reserve the right to stop supporting outdated software.
