Anyone else having battery drain after the latest 9.24 update?

I purchased my Venu 3s about a month ago and have been very happy with it until the 9.24 update.  My battery life was 18-20% per day consistently with all features turned on.  After the 9.24 update it's been 33-35% per day.  I unplugged it from the charger this morning at 5:00 am and didn't put it on or do anything with it.  Checked it at 9:00 am and it had dropped 9% with no use.

My normal use is usually from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm so I was seeing a little over 1% per hour and I was expected to get a full 5 days out of it.  I've owned many Garmin watches and never had a problem like this.  Anyone else seeing this issue after updating to 9.24?  I fully feel like this is software issue since it was fine before the update.

Anyone have any suggestions to fix it if you found a solution?

  • Weeks after sending my logs to Garmin and following up for the results, I get the following lazy response from support:

    "Hello,

Thank you for your patience while our engineering team has reviewed these logs from your watch. It was found that your watch has the Always On display option enabled and this is the cause for your device seeing less than expected battery life.
This would be working as designed as that setting can cause the battery to drain faster with the backlight display always on. We recommend to change the timeout settings to improve the battery life on this watch.
    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

Honestly, I can't believe this is what they are going with.  Helloooooo....I had that on prior to the update too and it was fine.  It's clear they don't monitor these forums when they get complaints so see if others are having issues.  I guess we just have to wait until they decide to do something about this.  $450 watch....disgusting that we can't get better support.
Again, the issue only happens when I use a GPS related activity.  Other than that, the watch is fine.  It's like the GPS isn't truly turning off.

  • My battery drain hasn't been fixed with update 9.27.

My Venu 3S currently uses about 4.5% battery per hour, resulting in less than 24 hours battery life from a full charge.

No AOD, no activities, Garmin watch face, no SPO2 tracking during the day. Even tried deleting all Connect IQ apps and turning on battery saver with no change.

  • All,

If anybody still has inquiries about the battery life on their device, please reach out to Garmin Product Support directly. They will need to view your watch settings in order to bring this particular topic down to an individual level.

  •  Al final no funciona y el drenaje continúa sin solución, entre 60 y 70 %,. Un saludo.

  • I was pretty upset because I recently bought my first Garmin and I liked a lot but the battery had me dissapointed, with the solution you shared it fixed my problem and now 2 days after I did that, I still have 83% battery wearing it all day and doing some activities with the watch. Thank you a lot!

  • I followed the instructions on connecting to Garmin Express, but my battery is still draining fast. It was at 100% before I went to bed, and it was at 84% when I woke up. I've barely owned the watch for a year!!!

Agreed - $450 watch that's supposed to have at least 10 days of battery life. Yeah, that's not happening.

  • I may have found the beginnings of a fix for the battery drain issue.

I haven't fully tested it yet, as it'll take a while and Garmin know as much as I've been able to tell them but I need to share because it's better than before by a very long way. The process is also very reversible, so not a big deal. You just need to remember/photograph what apps/glances are installed on your watch, from the list in Garmin Express, when plugging the device into your laptop.

Plug into Garmin Express and click on your device and then on the applications screen. You get a list choice of All possible applications, ones installed on your device, applications, glances and maybe another option. Look at what's installed on your device and photograph the list.

I removed fitness tracking "applications" (NOT the smartwatch Applications like phone, flashlight, dial, timer etc. you need those ones)

I took off only the duplicate fitness tracking applications but left the "glance" versions. For example, you'll see 2 calorie burn installments or 2 steps installments. One is called an "application, one is called a "glance".

I am not a wheelchair user and also uninstalled everything to do with tracking wheelchair fitness, as it takes up space.

I have a theory that the wheelchair tracking may have been added to the watch software at a later date than the watch manufacture, I don't think this was an original feature. I think it's possible it was added in with an update at some point and may be part of the problem but I'm only theorising at this point.

You can always reinstall anything if you don't like the outcome of this.

I have yet to test the battery from 100% and see how long it will last. I have to try reinstalling certain things and also changing my settings back to more battery unfriendly settings, coupled with the app removal. Different combinations basically. See what's best.

My watch still works the same as before, after removing the applications and keeping only the glances. All the information I need is there and there's the phone app info as well. The drain is very significantly different.

As I say, all experimental but in 3 days, I've been hovering between 29 and 18 percent battery. That'd usually go in one night. Usually a drain of 25-35 percent overnight. Now it's draining 1% overnight.

I've not used it for any activities yet either but that usually didn't make a difference to the massive battery drain before.

I'll update this if anything else interesting happens
