Today ride at times to confirm some issues.
1. The radar detection distance becomes shorter and dull.
2. The only detect about 40m motor/80m car/100m bus.
Rode with the replacement unit today on 3.4 and went 38 miles..
It performed much better than the unit I returned.. Single vehicle detection was on par with 3.0 and multi vehicle detection was also on par save for a few hiccups..
1. Was passed by several groups where only 4 of the 5 were detected at distance. The 5th in the pack would be detected just not at normal distance. Other instance include 4 in a pack and only 3 detected at distance.
2. Downtown I went 2 full blocks where nothing all all was detected. I was passed by 20 some odd cars and none were registered. These cars were easily going 10 mph + faster than I was. I'll call this a blip and keep an eye on it..
Overall the replacement unit performed MUCH better on 3.4 than the one it replaced.. I would not say it's any better than 3.0 but it's about the same based on my one ride with it.
I also would not say the unit I sent back was defective. That unit functioned perfectly under 3.0 and only showed issues on 3.4.
So what's causing some to see issues ONLY on 3.4 and some not? It has to be something internal hardware wise that the 3.4 update is not meshing properly with..
I'll do the same rout tomorrow (38 miles) and report back..
Rode yesterday and again today. So far about 125 miles with the new unit. The replacement is doing fine for the most part. Single vehicle detection is about the same as it was on my old unit with 3.0 and is an improvement over my old unit with 3.4.
Multiple vehicle detection is where it gets a bit tricky. If the vehicles are spaced out a little then the new unit on 3.4 does fine. It detects all the vehicle at a decent distance.
Where it still fails for me is when these multiple vehicles are clumped or close to each other. For instance, on a 2 or 3 lane roadway and lets say 7 vehicles coming. If all these vehicles are closely lumped, either front to back or side to side, the unit still fails to pick them all up. It may get 5 or 6 of the 7 but one or 2 are always missed. In addition to missing some vehicles, the detection of a few of the others is shorter..
All in all I think I can live with 3.4 on the replacement. It does fine for single vehicle detection, it does fine for multiple vehicle detection as long as they are spaced out a little. The only real issue I see on 3.4 is when several vehicles are clumped and / or in close proximity of each other..
Makes no difference to me if its 5 cars or 8. Just as long as I know when the cars are passed and when the next set is coming.
I am satisfied enough now with 3.4 to keep it on the unit but I still wonder why some units are effect by 3.4 and others are not. Based on the replies in this thread it looks like it's 50/50...
I see your point and it's valid but I mainly use the radar to try and avoid right hooks. If I see 5 dots, I expect 5 cars to pass and not 7.. One of those missed vehicles will inevitably be the one that right hooks you..
I don't trust my life on the unit and still do the look back but it would be nice if I weren't surprised by more cars that the radar detected..
