automatic switch on?

I have the Garmin headlight which turns on automatically when the Edge 1000 is switched on. However, I have to manually hold down the radar button and turn it on to connect it with my Edge each time. Why won't the radar automatically connect to the Edge 1000 once I turn the Edge unit on (like the headlight).
  • I believe the radar will only auto power on for the 1st minute after it's auto powered down by the Edge. Once the Edge powers it down, the radar will blink a light (blue I think) for about a minute. During that time, powering the Edge back on will power the radar back on. After that time the radar needs to be manually powered on.

That matches my findings. The lights can can only be woken if they are in a state where the blue light is blinking. The radar only stays in that state for a couple of minutes after switch off, the headlight stays that way indefinitely. Just press the button on the radar and it will wake and connect thought, so not really a biggie.

I see exactly the same difference from my radar vs headlight, including variation between both between blinking blue light behaviour (btw in the chart of the radar documentation, the fact that the light can be blue is not even mentioned, let alone explained). I do not own the regular tail light so I cannot compare with it. I think the reason people do not seem to complain that much is that the issue is not that easy to formulate. I actually didn't know what to google so I came to the forums hoping to find a topic that would lay it down nicely (and I found this one).

From various comments it sounds like both are missing some kind of configurable parameters. First I'd expect both lights to behave the same way. Then I'd also appreciate being able to configure what this behaviour is. I like the idea of the lights being able to pair with the Edge when it turns on (as the headlight currently does). I do not like though that this drains the battery beyond what is reasonable; I do not think it has to be like this. Also I would like to tell the light to stay shut even when paired when there is sufficient light, and also not go on overdrive all the time. Being only able to cycle 1h on full charge, because half of the battery goes away with the blinking blue light overnight, and the other half goes away because the light is on overdrive, makes it pretty much impossible to use all the features of the light.

I bought those lights hoping to have a smarter replacement for otherwise perfectly functionning "dumb" lights, and I find myself having to carry around both sets of lights because the Varia lights let me down very quickly. As much as I like the general concepts, it's hard to recommend these lights as things stand.

Hopefully this can be improved in future Edge / Varia software updates.

Same here. I added a varia remote so I could manually dip the headlight and that has caused even more confusion. It seems to battle with my 520 for control of the light. I wasted most of my battery at the weekend as unknown to me it had disconnected and then turned itself on during the daylight phase of my ride. So it was pretty much flat when I needed it late in the afternoon.

So I carry my Lezyne lights with me now just in case...
