Varia car approaching notification not appearing on Edge 1000

The Varia pairs up fine with my Edge 1000. I've enabled the device in devices and turned it on in the data screen section. Both have up to date firmwares.

The Varia is mounted just above my seatpost clamp - height wise approx. 32 inches from ground to centreline of Varia.

I went for a ride and despite being passed by many cars, the alerts (dots and flashing red bars etc..) did not appear at all on the Edge 1000 display. The connection logo appears in the top right hand corner fine.

What am I doing wrong? Is the Varia set too low or is there an issue with it I'm unaware of? Garmin haven't exactly specified the minimum height the Varia needs to be to ensure adequate detection...?

Thanks for the update.

If you leaving the LEDs flashing on the radar unit (light mode flashing or override), but cover them up so that you can more easily see what the status LED is doing, what does it do?

Yes, I also did that following one of your question in a previous post! The fact is that I'm note sure if the status LED is showing anything, since that even when covering the main LEDs the status LED gets some light over, from the inside I guess! I tried to check closely and it seems to be off.

So I have some clarification. If the calibration data is missing then after the unit has powered up the top LEDs do not flash it will be just the status LED (RGB) that file flash red.

So looking at the Video you posted the radar unit looks OK.

What software version do you have on the Edge?

Is the unit mount like it is in the picture in posting #8 on this thread? (It is mounted correctly in these pictures).

On the Edge I have the 5.10.

Yes, the mount is like that in the picture. I have a Specialized S-Works Tarmac Disc and the mount is at the most higher point below the seat.

I spent some time working with Garmin on this and here is the latest update.

Part of the confusion here has been that there are actually 2 different problems.

Problem 1 - Missing calibration data
Symptom - If you switch the radar unit on and let it complete the power up sequence none of the LEDs will go on except the status LED. The status LED will flash red.
Corrective action - The unit needs to be replaced.

Problem 2 - Radar transmitter is switched off
Symptom - The radar powers on and the LEDs can be set to flash or to be steady. The Edge will pair with the radar and will display traffic if the radar is put in to demo mode, but it will not display traffic when out of demo mode. The reason is that the radar is not sending a signal to detect traffic.
Corrective action - Garmin will fix this in a future release, but in the short-term they have made build 2.41 available, which fixes this issue. Download the attached zip file and unpack the gupdate.gcd file in to the Garmin folder on the radar unit. After doing the install you can leave the unit at build 2.41 or roll it back to build 2.20.

Is this update for a specific batch of Varias? That is, those that use the Edge as a display AND exhibit the problem?

This is a fix for the units that have problem 2 described in posting #56. It will not cause any issues if you install it on units that do not have this problem. I have been told that 2.41 is very similar to build 2.20, but with a change to force the radar transmitter to be enabled and a few other minor changes. These changes will be incorporated in to the next public release for all users and will be available for download via Garmin Express. I'm assuming it will be release 2.50.

If you do download the file to fix the radar unit I think it would be useful if you could post that you have done that and along with the serial number of the radar unit. That information will allow the manufacturing batch to be determined.

Hey guys good news !!! My 3rd varia actually works ! Big thanks to Evans Glasgow (Fraser) who did all the testing until he got one that worked . 1st ride 40 miles and worked exactly how it should , very pleased now . Garmin had me doubting myself at times with their customer service !! So anyone buying one of these I must stress to check it works in shop before you take home .

After a wait, yesterday I picked up a replacement Varia from Evans Cycles (they were good about it). Got home late due to cycling into gale force winds so did nothing, other than checking this thread, pairing with Edge 1000 and noting software version 2.3. Optimistically, took it out. No joy. I'd figured the v2.3 wouldn't do it from Alan's reference to 2.41.

Applied the patch, just been out and it works. Thanks again Alan - you're a star.

Serial number is 4L8000706 - from London, England.
