Firmware update install problems

I got a brand new Edge Explore 2 from Garmin online last week and am very disappointed in lots of aspects. My immediate problem, which may possibly solve some other issues, is that it has been supplied with software version 4.10 (a41843c0bf) which seems to be about 4 years out of date.

The About screen says that there are no updates available - so how do I go about updating it, or should I ask for my money back?

The GPS version is given as 6.00 and wireless firmware 0.05. Connect IQ version 4.1.1 - all as shown on the Copyright Info Screen. Are these anywhere near current?

Hope this device is not as bad as the version of the UI that it has been supplied with - hopelessly confusing and unsuitable for cycle touring and walking (my uses). Perhaps it is only intended for wannabe pro cyclists in which case Garmin should make that clear.

I'm prepared to give the new firmware a try to see if it helps, but I need to know how to get it please.

  • Hi there,

Updates can go through Garmin Connect on your phone or Garmin Express on your PC or Mac.

Maybe you are confused about the type of unit you have? This is the Edge Explore section of the forum and you're mentioning software being 4 years out of date.

On the other hand, your post begins with the purchase of a brand now Edge Explore 2 which has its own forum section and that unit was released less than 1 year ago.

  • Ah, thank you. I hadn't spotted that there was a separate '2' forum. I was told by an app developer whose app I was having difficulties installing that the software v4.x was out of date for my Edge (working from the details of the device as detected automatically by his app) - so I guess his app wasn't distinguishing between 1 and 2.

So it looks like I DO have the latest software, which is a very disappointing as I find it very confusing and difficult to use coming from an eTrex 30x. The unit is now on its way back to Garmin as not suitable for my uses (walking and touring cycling) which wasn't at all clear from the available info. Basically my fault for mistakenly buying a fitness-freak device for everyday plodding.

Many thanks for you your helpful answer. There doesn't seem to be an eTrex forum which is a shame as I'll now be getting a new one to replace my old one with a busted screen. Or perhaps a non-Garmin device - more research needed (the etrex screen is a little small and the joystick is a bit of a pain, but at least it creates standard GPX files not propriatary .fit ones.)

  • The latest software for the Edge Explore 2 is 8.06. You can update the software using Garmin Express while the device is wired up to the PC (USB).

Maybe better to start a new thread in the Explore 2 section?

  • Thanks bikepc01 - one of several reasons I have returned the Edge device to Garmin is that Garmin Express is not available for Ubuntu so I actually can't update that way.

  • Another option is using Garmin Connect Mobile to install new device software. It can take long time however. I've no experience updating software this way.
