Bluetooth connection problems after FW 9.00

Hi,
Just to mention the huge difficulties to re-pair my Edge Explore 820 to iPhone 7 after the new FW update 9.00.
I tried to delete device from iPhone, delete iPhone from the device, re-pair, reset device, reset iPhone, ... and I get it connected to the iPhone easily, BUT in Garmin Connect Mobile (versión 4.6), it keeps on showing the message "attention is needed" under the device name, like if a last step of the process was missing.
I have read also pairing difficulties in other Edge forums linked to this new FW update (9.00).
I tried to download again the Garmin Connect Mobile App, but it does not solve the problem. I can pair other Garmin devices with no issue.
If anyone experienced the same or knows any solution, would be appreciated.
Thanks

These steps did not work for me. What are you seeing under "Select An Accessory" and under "My Devices" on your iPhone? I only have BT_Edge 820. It shows connected under iPhone/Settings, however will not pair through the Garmin Connect App. Previous firmware, I had BLE_Edge 820 in addition to BT_Edge 820. Without BLE_Edge 820, pairing doesn't work on my iPhone.

I experienced the same issue as described by others. I did a factory reset of my iPhone and that solved the problem. You can do that through iTunes. Back up your phone before doing the factory reset and you get the option to reinstall your phone.

The device I paired with was called BT Edge Explore 820. The item which appeared in the popup screen in the Garmin app was called Edge Explore 820, and it took some 30s to appear after the former was paired at phone level.

By the way, I think the "BT" bit appears after and if you rename the default bluetooth name in the Edge's Phone Settings screen. Whatever you change the default name to gets a BT in front of it. I cannot remember if it had the _ or not, it probably did.

Just to be clear, this worked for me without a factory reset of the IPhone. I just did a restart, which takes some 15s and you do not loose any settings. A factory reset can be a big pain if you have a lot of configured apps and custom settings.
  • Shock and awe ... I tried again and managed to get it to work (i.e. Edge Explore 820 FW.9.0 pair with IPhone 6S IOS 11.3.1).

    This is what I did

    1. Delete phone pairing from Edge Explore 820
    2. Forget Edge from IPhone
    3. Delete Garmin Connect App from IPhone
    4. Download and reinstall Garmin Connect App but do not restart
    5. Turn off Edge
    6. Turn off IPhone (proper hold Home button to turn off, and then restart)
    7. Open Garmin Connect App, and go to setup device wizard
    8. Start setup for new Edge Explore 820 ... get to the new Select Accessories popup window (which will be empty and no options showing)
    9. Switch to IPhone bluetooth settings
    10. Start Phone pairing in Edge
    11. In IPhone bluetooth settings select BT Edge Explore 820 new device and pair, accept on both it and Edge
    12. Switch back into Garmin Connect App and wait ... eventually Edge Expore 820 appears in Select Accessories popup window ... select it
    13. Magic ... it completed pairing and then synced ... Edge also beeps that it's paired with phone etc etc

Sync and contacts and etc all seem to be working normally now.

Not sure which of the steps above is the magic one ... I wonder if it's the IPhone restart ...

Now to see if the pairing is remembered ...

Again, if of interest, on Saturday I took this Edge Explore (now paired) for a 50 mile ride. I had preconfigured a course, and 'navigated' to the starting point. I had bluetooth headphones on, and they immediately started giving me spoken navigation instructions ... which go from the Edge to the IPhone to the headphones, so the pairing must have worked as soon as I turned on the Edge. The Edge also had a Varia Radar and Vision hud connected to it, and all was fine.

I had the screen on Backlight Always on, although only at 10%, and Grouptrack disabled, and after 3 hours the battery was down to 60% ... with navigation on all the time.

When I got home I 'save'd the ride, and it was on Strava via Garmin Connect within seconds.

So the pairing is still working fine even after the Edge was turned off (I always fully Power Off) and back on.

You are right. You should try restarting your phone first and try all the other things Garmin support tell you to try before trying this. These recommandations however didn't work for me, so factory reset of the phone was last resort before sending my unit back to Garmin. If you properly back up your phone in iTunes and then restore the backupped version, you keep all your apps and settings, so scaring, but not too bad. I does however take longer than just retarting the phone.

  • I had a different issue with v9, so this is a word of warning. Having finished a 210km ride on Sunday, my Explore 820 (running on v8.7) beeped and told me that I'd just beaten my previous longest ride, but for some reason the data didn't upload to Connect. After a couple of phone and Garmin restarts I finally gave up and plugged in to a laptop, hoping to manually upload the .fit file. Connect told me that the file couldn't be uploaded as it was corrupted. Here comes the BIG mistake: by this time Garmin Express had"offered" the v9 upgrade, which I accepted thinking that it might deal with the "corrupted" .fit file better than 8.7 (failing which I'd try one of the .fit file repair sites). However, after the upgrade was completed, I looked in the "Activities" folder for the file and it was not there, presumably deleted during the upgrade. Even a file retrieval app couldn't locate it (although it managed to recover every other activity I'd done and deleted during the latt two months or so). To say I was a bit miffed would be an understatement (and the upgrade re-set all of the activity screens again too). On the plus side, syncing and uploading on my ride yesterday morning worked perfectly, so perhaps I won't experience the other problems detailed on this thread!

It might be helpful to know what model phones people are using.
  • I'm also having some problems after updating to v9. I managed to get all work, but now I always have to check bluetooth off>on (phone) until 820 edge finds both bt connections.
When updating to v9, I removed everything (app, connections + factor reseted 820). Everything started to work. But now after couple of days BT_Edge Explore 820 connection doesn't work until I switch bt off/on.
    I have iPhone X, iOS 11.4.
