Edge 830 turns itself on after being disconnected from charge

  1. Connect to charger - unit turns itself on.
  2. Turn the unit off
  3. Disconnect from charger - unit turns itself on.

Can I stop BOTH of these auto-wakes from happening?  I've repeatedly pulled the charger out and not realised the unit turned itself on, then gone to ride the next day and it's flat.

  • Are you sure a official Garmin cable is being used? You will find Garmin imprinted on one on the connectors. Also, if charging from a computer, make sure you have not connected the Garmin to any kind of USB hub. Connect it directly to the computer.

  • I did not receive a Garmin charging cable with my 830 (purchased new) so no, I am not using a Garmin cable.  It's on my list of things to test but will require me to buy a cable, so I'm going to see if something else fixes it first

    Cheers

  • I have just gave mine a thorough testing with various cables, data and non data and various power sources.

I find that my 530 only turns on after the power source is switched off is if I am connected to the PC either directly or through a hub and using a power/data cable including Garmin brand or non Garmin brand cables. If I use a power/non data cable connected to the PC either directly or through a hub, it does not turn on when the power is switched off.

If I use a power/ data cable including the Garmin cable or just a power cable connected to any other form off power supply ie wall sockets, power packs etc, the device does not turn on.

Unfortunatley, I have my device connected to the PC most off the time, so it is easy to forget it is connected to the PC and switch off the power when I have finished with the PC.

But, I am sure that it has also turned itself on in the past when I have disconnected from alternative power sources before., ie, I once found it turned on and almost flat one morning when I went to an event the night before and left it connected to the cigarette lighter socket which loses power when I turn off the ignition and remove the key.

  • Awesome, thankyou for sharing!  I have a USB wall outlet next to my bike rack but for some reason I use the PC to charge the garmin... will switch to the outlet, it'll make charging ever so slightly more convenient as well.

Will monitor over the next however long, with any luck this solves it

EDIT: tested using a wall outlet, turned on as soon as I plugged the cable in.  Turned off (long press, "power off"), removed cable, stayed off.  Inserted cable again, stayed off.  Removed cable, stayed off.  Inserted cable again, stayed off.

I'm 99.9% sure it hasn't sat in sleep mode for the past week since I used it last.  Will keep charging using the wall outlet and see how it goes.

    thanks again

  • I also overlooked something else which I remembered whilst on my ride this morning:-

If I am connected to the PC by the front USB ports or a hub connected to the front ports using a Data/power cable, if I turn the computer off using the operating system, the Edge will boot up.

But, if I am connected to the rear USB ports on the case or by a hub connected to the rear ports with a data/power cable and I turn the PC off using the operating system, the Edge will not boot up but will continue to be charged up etc. But, in this situation, if I then switch the PC off completely by the wall socket, the Edge will boot up.

This is because my rear USB ports still provide power despite the PC being switched off, It is only by switching the power off completely to the PC do the rear USB ports stop providing power and that is enough to make the Edge turn on. Same with my mobile phone, I can only charge it from the rear ports if the PC is off but the PC is still connected to power, but at least my phone does not turn on when I disconnect the power completely.

Just tested it to confirm this is what happens.

  • In fact, disregard my last regarding rear USB ports on my PC. There seems to be no logic to it, the Edge will sometimes turn on and sometimes not turn on when the PC itself is closed down with a data/power cable.

Maybe it has something to do with if any data transfers etc have been made or not or anything else that goes on when an Edge is connected to a PC.
