Navigation issue

Former Member

Good day.

I have a problem with my Edge 830. I create a course (and it doesn't matter in Ridewithgps or Garmin connect) when I start navigating the course, instead of guiding me along the course (prompting the next turn, etc.) he finds the shortest distance to the final point - it wants to send me to the ending, instead of directing me to the next turn. If I have planned a route that starts and ends at same point, when I start moving along the direction of the route, I get how to get back to the starting point. In the overview of the route, normal information is visible - height, climbs, distance. Help me please!

  • I'll just point out for clarity, recording an activity and navigating or riding a course are completely separate on the Edge.  One you press Start, your activity is being recorded regardless of whether you're just randomly riding, following a course, having the Edge navigate course, stop navigating, start navigating, change the navigation.  It doesn't matter and the Edge will keep recording your activity.  It only stops when you hit the Start/Pause button.  It will pick up recording if you hit that button again.  It'll stop for good when hit Pause and then save the activity.  All of that is independent of navigation.

  • Actually I found this to be much worse on the 800.  With the 830 if I don’t tell it to navigate to the start it mostly works. My club rides are all made with RWGPS and all are, of course loops.   Yes, you can kludge it by not starting the ride for a couple hundred meters.  But it seems like this should be solvable based on time from start or something.

  • Given that it's continues to be a problem, it doesn't seem reasonable to expect it will ever be solved.

It's easy enough to create the route so the issue doesn't occur. And that's something that can be done.

  • It's completely reasonable to expect that a reputable company can and will fix this annoyance. The unit knows the mileage that has been ridden when the course was activated. If the mileage is low then start the route at the nearest out-bound point. If the mileage is high then start the route on the return leg.

    It's reasonable to want it.

The fact that it's been an issue for a long time and is still an issue suggests that it's not reasonable/realistic to expect that it will ever be fixed.

In any case, the fix you suggested wouldn't work very well.

  • Interesting.  I def had this issue with earlier Edge devices going back to the 705.  For loops I'd always lay out the course stopping 1/4-1/2 mile short of the end so I wouldn't get too close to it at the beginning of the ride and have the Edge think I'd finished.  For out and back or lollipops, I'd lay out separate out and back courses.  At least since the 820 I haven't had this issue and I could lay out full courses as I ride them, overlaps and all.  So, it was a problem with earlier units, then it was fixed.  Not sure why it's occurring again.

  • It seems the newer units deal with overlaps much better (which is another issue anyway).

The "picking the end point" problem still exists but it may be the unit figures it out and re-establishes the right part of the course as you ride (just like it does returning to the course after leaving it).

I see the issue fairly regularly with newer units (riding in a club).

There never was any reason for the course to be shortened by 1/4 or more miles.

In any case, it's a little bit annoying but has an easy enough fix.

The key thing to understand is that you want the lines from where people load/start the course (the magenta X's below) to be shorter to the first point (green below) than the last point (red below). In this case, having the end at the green X would work better.

  • Managed to go for my 1st ride of the year yesterday...........no rain! Anyway, I rode a course with the finishing point 50 yards short of the finish and had no issues at the start, so thanks for your advice!
