EDGE830 New FW 6.0 : problem with Strava routes elevation and climbs

Hi,

My EDGE 830 Firwmare has been updated with FW 6.0 release.

This new firmware brings problem with Strava routes sync through Garmin Connect.

The ride elevation and climbs are completely wrong.

I've done several test and the issue happens on routes sync from strava through Garmin Connect , but it does not show up when i directly download the Strava routes using IQ Strava apps.

it does not affect the routes created on Garmin connect .

anyway facing a similar issue ?

cheers

nicolas

  • I have the exact same problem: route created in Strava, starred to be exported to Garmin, in Garmin Connect has the same elevation as on Strava, but the one downloaded on the device itself has double elevation...

  • I have logged a ticket with Strava, as it could easily be a problem at their end.

  • I"ve seen this problem along on 5.5 ever since Garmin enable Star-syncing of routes from Strava. I just upgraded to 6.0 today. Somewhere I read that when the route is synced from Strava to Garmin Connect, Garmin overwrites the elevation with its own (really bad) elevation data. In fact, the data is SO BAD that it once popped up Climb Pro, in the middle of a descent that had zero climbing on it. I have even seen 3x and 4x elevation inflation, not just double. Why Garmin, why do you do this to perfectly good elevation? I've seen this also on my 1030 so it is not just a device or firmware version issue. Is a server issue on Garmin side.

And yes, now that the Strava Connect IQ app is non-functional, the only way for me to get a good elevation Strava file on to my device is to physically plug the device into my computer via USB cable and download from strava either TCX or GPX.

  • Ok guys , lots of good inputs on this GC bug.

I'm still surprised as I've been using Strave to Garmin Edge route synchronization for more than 1 year without any elevation issue.

the problem started only after I upgraded Maps and FW  over last week end.

so one item changed in my setup and triggered the issue .

workaround is fine ( direct Strava IQ import) , but it is less convenient...

  • The Strava IQ app still works and is available from the store. It's not supported any more, but it still works. I have just downloaded and tested it.

  • It is still supported. Garmin released a new build in August 2020.

  • Hi

it looks the behavior in my case is different than the one reported by Chrisba_

let me give some more snapshots:

    1) Route creation : Strava route : 810m elevation

2nd step : Garmin route as visible on the Web : still the right elevation  ( 810m)

    3)  Garmin Connect on the Phone Apps: still good ! ( 810m)

Eventually , the route on my Garmin EDGE  830 device  after getting sync from Garmin Connect:

so, the elevation issue  is not visible in the Garmin Connect ,  but only on the Edge device.

    any idea ?

  • Hi Nicolas...Same issue myself on 1030+ ...Also had the issue on my older 1030. Exactly as you describe...Route created in Strava / Star the route / syncs to GC mobile /(Elevation data still good at this stage) / Sync to Edge 1030+ and elevation data is 3x what it is meant to be, also instead of ClimbPro reporting 6 climbs on the route, It now has 13! These (false) climbs are on a flat piece of coast road and showing avg grades of 25-45%!!!!

So the problem seems to be with auto Star-Syncing on Strava and when the Edge gets that elevation data, it overwrites it with it's own data for some weird reason.

I have downloaded the Strava Routes IQ app today and when importing the route that way, all elevation data is correct again.

Emailed Garmin yesterday about this and will update you when I get a reply.

PS: The same issue is happening on rides that are 'Pinned' on RWGPS.
