Failed to update Aus/NZ maps

Help!

I'm in Australia. I've just received a refurbished unit from Garmin as a replacement for a 13 month old faulty unit. It came with firmware v5.20 and gps s/w v2.60 but over the course of the evening it's updated itself to v5.50 and gps v2.90.

Then, expecting that the maps would be old too, I plugged it into my Mac and fired up Garmin Express. Updates available for maps - no surprise so I clicked install.

It thought for a while, gave the warning prompts that this might take a while then, after I hit continue, a couple of seconds of thinking then

"there was an error installing the update". After disconnecting it from teh Mac and restarting, I have no maps!

Through various partial syncs I've managed to get it to accept the new EU maps (Routable Cycle Maps of Europe 2018.20) which are available to all, Trailforks 2019.10 and Trailforks 2018.20.

What won't install is Routable Cycle Maps of Australia and New Zealand 2018.20. Every time, I click install, accept the licence agreement, continue after the warning that this might take awhile.

It does step1 "Preparing device for a map update" then fail with a red background behind text  "there was an error installing the update"

Am I sending it back to Garmin or can anyone help please?

  • For others who have the same problem of the Garmin Express failing to complete the update of maps being the 'Routable cycle map of Australia and NZ'. I have just bought the Garmin Edge 830 and after installing Garmin Express, the Map update repeatedly failed to update. I use an Apple Macbook air laptop as my computer. I took all the USB connections from my USB Hub - reconnected my Garmin Edge cable to another port - rebooted my computer and retried the Maps Update again and it successfully updated. Garmin also suggests trying another cable which I didn't have to do. About 6 hours of my life gone up to that point but now can relax and let my blood pressure go down. Hope this helps.

  • I realise it is deeply frustrating for people to say "I had no problems..." but I didn't. After reading this I thought maybe my Oz/NZ map needs updating so I connected to Express, there it was, 7 minutes later, done. I have a PC (fairly old / pre-historic M/S Surface Pro) , the one USB outlet goes into my monitor which has half a dozen USB ports one of which goes to the Garmin, so I suppose that's a hub, anyway it worked.

  • Worked!  Thanks folks.  I wish Garmin offered this solution.  It doesn’t appear to work via cable connected to an external hub.
